Role system
The player can control one of three character classes - warrior, paladin or mage; the class is selected at the start of the game and cannot be changed. There are no fundamental differences in controlling characters of different classes; only the abilities and additional skills of the characters differ.
As in most role-playing games, the hero can develop, receive bonuses and increase his level. You can get it in two ways - completing tasks and fighting. With each level increase, the hero is asked to increase one of his characteristics - attack, defense (added to the corresponding parameters of units), intelligence (determines the power of spells), the maximum number of rage and mana points (rage is used to summon Spirits, and mana is spent on spells) and leadership. There is also a separate skill tree, divided into three components - the skills of Strength, Spirit and Magic. To learn each skill, you need a certain number of runes of a certain type, as well as, in most cases, learned other skills.
Artifacts, wives and children can also influence the characteristics and abilities of the hero. Each artifact occupies one of the special slots - helmet, shield, cloak, etc. Some artifacts have “morality”, which depends on various factors - the parameters of the hero, the composition of his army, his behavior, etc. If the “morale” of the artifact falls below a certain threshold, then it stops acting and must be “pacified” - fight with its guardians.
The hero’s wife can give birth to children; to do this, you need to choose the appropriate line during dialogue with her. In total, the game provides six different wives, access to which opens as you progress, while the hero can only have one of them at a time. Each wife has her own bonus and also provides four additional slots for carrying artifacts. But if you have a child, then he, along with a permanent bonus, occupies the cell forever. If you divorce your wife, then she takes with her the contents of her slots, be it artifacts or children, and a fifth of the hero’s monetary fortune.
Peculiarities
- The game contains the Ultrax location. Its name corresponds to the name of one of the enemies in the 1990 game King's Bounty.
- The name of the main character of the game - Bill Gilbert - is the pseudonym of the cult hacker, who became famous for hacking games for the ZX-Spectrum in the 80s and 90s, and left his autograph in them in the form of the line “Cracked by Bill Gilbert”. Warrior, Mage and Paladin
Of the four classes of King's Bounty, three remain, and the sorceress has changed her gender; there are persistent rumors that the same fate awaits the disappeared barbarian - but in addition. The role-playing system of the game is not too complex, although intricate. The hero has the following parameters:
attack, defense - added to the attack and defense of fighters, as in “Heroes”;
intelligence - enhances spells;
leadership - determines the maximum size of each squad (fighters have a parameter with the same name - divide the hero’s leadership by the fighter’s leadership and get the maximum squad size);
maximum mana and rage. Fury is also a kind of mana, but it is needed to use the powerful capabilities of the Box of Fury (see “Four from the Casket”).
He also has a whole system of slots for various items and a set of special abilities.
These abilities are represented by three trees, very reminiscent of the talent tree from World of Warcraft (it seems that the spirit of this game hovers somewhere in King's Bounty - this is not the first time such a comparison has come up). The trees are called “Strength”, “Spirit” " and "Magic", and to obtain talents you need runes, which exist in just three colors. Each talent has a price in runes, and abilities from the Power tree may require a small amount of spirit or magic runes, and so on. two or three levels.
Runes come with level; Of course, the warrior has the largest number of power runes (to be honest, I don’t even need so many of them: at the end of the game I had several dozen unclaimed red runes left), the paladin has the spirit, and the mage has magic. But they can also be found simply on the map in the form of prizes, in a chest with treasure, or even received as a reward for a mission. In addition to the speed at which runes arrive, the classes differ slightly in ability trees (each has two special skills that are not available to others). And of course, their characteristics grow differently.
The warrior is strong in attack, somewhat weaker in defense, his threshold of rage and leadership grows quickly, and his mana slowly. The warrior's special skills are anger (he gains rage faster in battle) and iron fist (you can hire more swordsmen, knights and cavalry). At the same time, anger can be developed almost immediately, and the iron fist is at the very end of the tree. Of course, a warrior can afford a larger army than the rest, but his most important plus is that he can hardly think about the reserve of rage; it grows quickly enough to with a certain amount of prudence, use the Box almost every turn. This makes combat very easy...
It seems that it is not at all necessary to develop the Strength line all the way. Valuable runes of magic, without which you cannot reach the end of this tree, will come in handy to accumulate some kind of magic for yourself.
From the very beginning, the magician is quite effective in spells, but his army is small, attack and defense grow mediocre, and most importantly, there is not enough evil for his opponents. In the sense of rage. And this is still a big question: what is stronger - the spell or the Box! Therefore, it seems to me that playing as a mage is more difficult. True, he can afford the path of a necromancer - but it will be difficult for him to combine the living and the dead in one army; this, funny as it may be, is easiest... for a paladin.
The magician's special skills are alchemy (reduces the cost of learning spells, a must!) and high magic (allows you to cast spells twice per round, also a required program).
The paladin, in theory, represents the “golden mean” and specializes in spirit runes. His defense grows the fastest, and this combines wonderfully with the skill from the final part of the Spirit tree, which allows you to turn monks into inquisitors. The thing is that inquisitors resurrect fighters, and together with trained defense, this allows them to get by with a minimum of losses.
And the “middle ground” for the paladin is provided by the “runestone” skill, which, when investing runes of the spirit, gives runes of strength or magic (naturally, it is located closer to the end of the tree, otherwise it would be completely imbalanced). The second ability - holy wrath - increases damage against undead and demons, which will greatly simplify the ending of the game.
General Strength skills
Rifle commander. You can hire more archers, elves and skeleton shooters. It will come in handy... although there are still so many elves to be found!
Rage control. Increases maximum rage reserve; in my opinion - a typical must have.
Onslaught. In the first round, troops receive a plus to initiative. This means being able to fire the first salvo at enemies; however, many shooters (archmages, elves) are already doing well with initiative.
Fury. A unit that destroys an enemy receives a bonus to attack.
Night operations. Plus protection in dungeons and at night. Very useful when visiting gnomes and the undead; however, the usefulness is still moderate.
Caution. In the first round, the entire army takes less damage from physical attacks. This means that enemy arrows that have not yet been blocked will not cause as much trouble as they could - certainly useful.
Lord of Spirits. Spirits from the Box increase in levels faster. You won’t spare any runes for this - you’ll receive a fully developed Box already in the land of the elves.
Tactics. As in “Heroes” - the reshuffling of troops before the battle. Usefulness is average.
Dark commander. Plus attack and initiative for undead; if you are going to fight with her, this is essential, since her initiative is mediocre.
Training. Swordsmen receive an enhanced blow, archers receive an ice arrow that slows down the target, knights (at the highest level) receive a circular blow. It is simply necessary to develop archers, the rest is up to your taste.
General Spirit Skills
Diplomacy. You can lure some of the enemy troops if you have the same ones. It’s a good thing, but... will there be a place for them in your army?
Inquisition. But this - the right to make inquisitors out of priests - as I already wrote, is extremely valuable. Priests heal, that is, they can restore no more health than one fighter has, and inquisitors resurrect.
Education. Additional experience in battle. No comments needed.
Intelligence service. Allows you to obtain more detailed information about enemy units (first - who is in them, and as they develop - how many there are). In my opinion, it is not necessary to develop reconnaissance far, although you will have to get the first level: it is at the very root of the tree.
Reserve. Allows you to bring an additional squad with you (at the second level - two) without limiting leadership. This is an absolute necessity, I repeat, absolute. Not only that, having found valuable troops somewhere on the outskirts of the universe, you will not be forced to leave them there; the reserve can and should be used for its intended purpose, that is, as reinforcement to the main detachment. For example, you go to the dwarven kingdom; There are guardsmen in your army who are regularly and heavily mowed down by enemy attacks (they take the blow). You can take with you not just one set, but two, three, five - the reserve detachment can be of any size, as long as you have enough money. And you won’t have to return halfway around the world for replenishment. In the future, you will need to take shooters (gunners, elves) and cavalry with you in this form.
Glory. One-time increase in leadership. It is only quoted at the very beginning - then this plus will not be seen.
Tolerance. People do not receive penalties to morale (as morale is stupidly called here) for the presence of demons and undead in the army. If you are going to dabble in necromancy, don’t forget about it.
Trade. Allows you to sell items at a higher price. You can get by, but... on the Liberty Islands the treasures will contain things worth several tens of thousands, which at this level is quite decent money. This is when the greatest need for finance may arise. True, it will not be used very often later. But it gives a significant increase in money for things: from 25% to 100%. Still developed trade means that you don’t have to save money on the necessary thing: you can always sell it back for the same money.
Trophies. Fighting brings more gold. The plus is small, but, unlike trade, it is permanent.
Guardian of the light. For destroying demons and undead you will receive additional gold; As for me, it’s not really necessary.
General Magic Skills
Archmage. You can hire more archmages (!), priests and druids.
Concentration. Mana gradually increases during battle. Without this, relying on magic is difficult.
Magic of Order, Distortion, Chaos. Allows you to study spells of the corresponding school (without them, only read from scrolls); the second or third level allows them to be developed to this level. For schools of magic, see the corresponding chapter.
Meditation. On the map, the hero's mana grows faster. If you plan to use magic, this is a necessary thing.
Wisdom. Increases mana reserve and book capacity for scrolls.
Necromancy. Allows you to raise part of your troops in the form of undead after the battle.
Destroyer. More damage from combat spells. Really valuable only for a magician; it makes more sense for a warrior and paladin to rely on other enchantments.
Healer. Strengthens divine spells.

So, let's generate a character. It is best to take the baby dragon for protection. Defense will be Amelie's main parameter. Or into rage - this will make it easier for the dragon to build up, but it will be almost insignificant in the end.
We go through the tutorial and go on a tour of the islands. The first two cards are on Bolo and Scarlet Wind are on the first island of Debir and even without guards. We run around the island, collect all the prizes, and do not enter into battles. Then we go to the Scarlet Wind and repeat the procedure. It is already harder to steal a card on it, because... They strengthened them so much that they became a little stiff. So, let's take the composition: guard droids, mechanic droids, gunners, alchemists, giants. Of the artifacts, we equip the Royal Dwarf Ax (must be sold, +15% for hiring gnomes, +5 to attack), Dwarven forge (+10% for hiring gnomes, + to gnomes), mechanic's amulet (+20% for hiring droids, +2 to intelligence), Flute (+2 to morality for dwarves), Elemental axe.
