Yin yang trigram. Trigrams and their meaning
Bagua. 8 trigrams. The 8 gua signs, or 8 trigrams, are one of the fundamental concepts of the Chinese life sciences, and it is difficult to overestimate its importance. The properties of trigrams and the relationships between them are used in different schools of Feng Shui, such as Bazhai (8 houses) and Xuan Kong Feixing (Flying Stars), Qi Men Dong Jia and so on. The trigrams are used to create hexagrams described in the I Ching and used in Xuan Kung Da Gua Feng Shui and choosing dates.
What are 8 trigrams? Essentially, these are 8 images with which you can describe the whole variety of things in the surrounding world. Indeed, “Brevity is the sister of talent.”
We have already talked about two polarities, two poles of the existence of energy. Yin and Yang are the binary code of the Universe, but it is not enough to obtain a colorful, three-dimensional picture of the world. Just as a cell divides, forming a larger number, so Yin and Yang, uniting, give life to four Images: Old Yang, Old Yin, Young Yang (Yang line from below), Young Yin (Yin line from below). 4 images already allow us to describe a larger number of phenomena - 4 seasons, 4 cardinal directions, 4 times of human life, and so on.
Next, the 4 images are finally divided into 8 trigrams, or gua. (Bagua - ba:8, gua: trigram). Each trigram consists of three traits, or yao. Yang trigrams are those that have one trait - yang, and yin trigrams - those that have one trait - yin. There are also two special trigrams that display maximum yang (three yang traits) and maximum yin (three yin traits).
So far we have a nice diagram consisting of solid and broken lines. How can we use them to describe all the diversity of the world?
Each of the eight trigrams is an image that contains a huge number of associations. We can name for each element, color, shape, cardinal direction, family relationship, organ of the human body, taste, character, animal, and so on.
Qian is the most yang trigram. This is Father, Heaven, Sovereign. In a family, this is its head or a man over 45 years old. In the human body, Qian (or sometimes also written Tian) means the head, the brain. Qian is associated with power, authority, management, and leadership talent.
Dui - Swamp or Lake. A mischievous and playful youngest daughter (or a girl under 15), her father’s favorite. Blow corresponds to language, chatter. Fun, spontaneity, but also a desire for destruction.
Lee - Fire. The brightest trigram associated with the Sun or lightning, emotions and clarity. Middle daughter or girl from 15 to 30. The trigram corresponds to vision and eyes. The essence of this trigram is attractiveness.
Zhen - Thunder. Thunder is what spreads, what is heard from afar, this is spring with its blossoming and freshness. The eldest son, decisive and active, or a man from 30 to 45 years old. Since movement is important in this trigram, it corresponds to the legs and feet.
Xun (Shun) - Wind. Also a mobile trigram, but less aggressive than Zhen. Xun corresponds to a woman between 30 and 45 or the eldest daughter. It represents the buttocks and genitals. The essence of this trigram is penetration, restless mobility.
Kan - Water. Trigram of deep desires, subconscious, information. Middle son, or man from 15 to 30 years old. In the human body it corresponds to the ears. Kan symbolizes the hidden and hidden.
Gen - Mountain. Stubbornness and hidden softness. A small boy under 15 years old or a younger son. In the body it corresponds to the hands and fingers. Also associated with stagnation and doubt.
Kun is the most Yin trigram. Kun corresponds to the mother, as well as the Soil, fertile and life-giving. In the family this is a woman over 45 years old. In the human body it corresponds to the stomach and abdominal cavity. The earth provides equality, justice, it is thrifty and stingy.
Only the most famous associations associated with trigrams are listed here; in fact, there are many more of them.
Below you see the Preheavenly Bagua or Early Heaven Bagua, compiled by the ancient sage Fu Xi. With the help of the Bagua of the Former Heaven, one can describe the ideal order of things in the Universe.
The Bagua of Later Heaven is attributed to another sage, Wen Wang. The Late Heavenly Bagua already describes the real order of things, our earthly reality. Bagua of the Later Sky is often combined with Lo Shu and then the trigrams have associations with numerical values.
It is the Late Sky Bagua that is used, for example, in Flying Stars. The 81 combinations of nine stars are based on the interaction of trigrams. For example, the combination of 2 and 4, known as “quarrel between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law,” is explained very simply: 2 is Kun, the mother, an old woman, and 4 is Xun, the eldest daughter. It’s difficult for two women to get along in one house.)
The Later Sky Bagua is also used in a delightfully simple but very effective analysis of the house and the space around it using trigrams. For example, if there are ugly, sharp stones on the south side of the house, then the residents may have problems with vision, and if a tree on the northwest side has dried up, then you need to be attentive to the father of the family, he may get sick.

Everything in our universe, phenomena, objects and even organisms can be explained from the point of view of Yin-Yang. The vital energy Qi in motion gives birth to Yang (activity, movement, etc.), and when calming down it gives birth to Yin (passivity, serenity). Interaction gives rise to the diversity of all things in our universe.
Yin and Yang have two line symbols. Yang is a solid line. Yin is a broken line.
If you divide each of them, 4 types of energy appear.
Eight Trigrams of BaGua
Thus, the eight Bagua trigrams are graphically depicted as a combination of broken and solid lines. There are 8 combinations in total, which means that the possible number of trigrams is also eight.
This transformation process can be described in tree form:
Bagua trigram device
The combination of trigrams forms the Bagua octagon, with its help you can easily describe the variety of processes occurring in our world. Therefore, many feng shui schools are based on the Bagua octagon.
By the combination of lines in each of the trigrams, you can find out what kind of energy it carries - yang or yin. Trigrams with the same types of the same polarity (only broken lines or solid) are called extreme yang or extreme yin.
The remaining combinations of the trigram consist of one “Yang” or “Yin” line and two other lines of opposite directions. The character of each trigram is determined by the line that is in the minority; it will be considered the main one. That is, if a trigram contains one solid (yang) line, and the other lines (yin) are broken, then the trigram will be yang.
Manifestations of Bagua trigrams
Eight Trigrams of Bagua- these are 8 different images of the manifestation of Qi energy. With their help, you can easily describe all the processes occurring in our Universe, natural phenomena, disasters, cardinal directions, and body organs.
Each of the Bagua trigrams has an infinite number of meanings. That is why the following characteristics should be considered only a small part of the manifestation of the endless possibilities of the vital energy Qi.

How Bagua trigrams are used in Feng Shui
All Bagua trigrams are arranged in a circle, and each of them has its own direction according to the cardinal points.
There are two options for the arrangement of Bagua trigrams:
This arrangement of Bagua trigrams reflects the ideal, pristine structure of the world, everything in it is harmonious and constant. In this diagram, extreme Yang is located in the south and extreme Yin is located in the north. This arrangement of trigrams can be found on the famous Feng Shui symbol - the Bagua mirror.
Bagua of the Early Sky - describes a perfect model of the world, a universe that has achieved complete harmony. The Bagua of Early Heaven was compiled by Wu from Xia, who found a turtle on whose shell there was a magic Bagua square.
In Feng Shui practice, it is common to use the Bagua position of the late sky. This is explained by the fact that the real world is not ideal and in reality it is not always perfect, it is dynamic and constantly changing and developing. It has a change of seasons: winter, spring, summer. There are falls and successes, disappointments and hopes.
Feng Shui uses not four, but eight cardinal directions. This is the basic requirement for any analysis of a situation where it is necessary to establish which one. The façade of the building is facing light. Now let's look at the most fundamental symbol used in Chinese civilization: the 8 trigrams.
8 trigrams of the I Ching.
I Ching- Chinese classical system of predictions, based on a binary system derived from two basic units - yin and yang: respectively, the female, broken line (- -) and the male, solid line (-). A trigram is a combination of three lines, yin and yang. Accordingly, there are 2 to the third power, or 8 trigrams. In Chinese, trigrams are called "san yao kua" (or gua), which means "kua of 3 lines", or "kua" for short. Each kua is read starting from the bottom line upward. The Qian trigram with three solid lines is completely masculine and means Father. The Kun trigram with three broken lines is completely feminine and means Mother, as shown in column 7 of the table.
Interestingly, in the same column, the three sons are symbolized by trigrams with only one yang line, and the three daughters by trigrams with only one yin line.
Thus, a hierarchical structure can be created, starting with the Father trigram (a trigram with three solid Yang lines), up to the Mother trigram (with three broken Yin lines). On the other hand, in each trigram the bottom line represents the Earth, the middle line represents Man and the top line represents Heaven. In the table, the first column shows the trigram and its name, and the sixth column gives the general characteristics and effect of the trigram. The second column shows its Element. Note that Wood, Earth and Metal have two trigrams each, while Fire and Water have only one. The third column gives the traditional correspondence of the trigram with an animal. The fourth column shows associations with nature, and the fifth shows the connection of the trigram with a picture, since it reflects their connection with the season of the year.
To establish a connection between Feng Shui and trigrams, we must relate the trigrams to compass directions. The eight trigrams refer to the eight cardinal directions, but are arranged quite differently in two different systems, namely the Pre-Heaven Trigram Circle (supposedly invented by Fu Xi around 2800 BC) and the Post-Heaven Trigram Circle (associated with Wen, the first ruler Chou dynasty, approximately 1027 BC). Although we will not go into detail about the history of these two systems, it is important to remember that both are equally important. These two Circles are reflected in Figures 1.6 and 1.7. Trigrams are read from the base to the top, that is, if they are located in a circle, then from the center of the circle outward. The trigram lines closest to the center of the circle are the bottom ones and are considered the first lines.
We will be mainly interested in the After-Heavenly Circle of Trigrams, since it relates to the world existing in its present state, and it is this circle that you will need to study. Remember that trigrams are read from base to top, in a circle from the center outwards. The top line of the trigram is the most distant.
Please note that for the Father trigram all lines are solid (yang), and for the Mother trigram all lines are broken (yin), the trigrams of sons have only one yang line and daughters have only one yin line.
The 8 trigrams are combined with each other, making 8 x 8 = 64 hexagrams used in the I Ching.
In China, hexagrams are called "ta kua", or large kua, to distinguish them from "san yao kua", that is, kua consisting of 3 lines, or trigrams. You can breathe a sigh of relief: in Flying Star Feng Shui, hexagrams are not important, and we will need to focus on the 8 trigrams. But it is still useful to know that the I-Ching hexagrams are directly related to Feng Shui (and are the basis of another school of Feng Shui - see Appendix 7).
Magic square of lo shu in Feng Shui.
Lo Shu is one of the oldest Feng Shui tools. In its basic form it contains 9 digits:
This is the main magic square of the Earth, but it is not the only form of square. In each of the 9 Periods, the numbers in the grid may be positioned differently. All Periods are shown in full in Appendix 7. The Lo Shu Square is called magical because the sum of all numbers horizontally, diagonally or vertically is always 15. In Europe, this magic square is associated with the Earth and the planet Saturn. Nine numbers in 9 squares form the basic pattern. We must fit some of the other symbols we already know into this square.
Lo Shu exactly coincides with the After-Heaven circle of trigrams. Since there are 9 cells in Lo Shu, it is natural that 8 trigrams should be equated to external cells. The number nine is considered the most yang as the odd and largest integer. The south is the hottest or most yang of the directions. Therefore, in the main square of Lo Shu, the cell with the number 9 is oriented to the south. The 5 Elements are arranged accordingly.
Each of these key feng shui elements is emphasized to a greater or lesser extent in the different schools of feng shui that have developed over the past few millennia. Essentially, they all use the Elements we have already discussed in this chapter, but they place different emphasis on them. One of the main differences between the 8 Mansions school of feng shui and the Flying Star school is the treatment of Luo Shu. The 8 Mansion School only uses the above-mentioned basic Luo Shu square shape. The Flying Star School discovered that the energies represented by these numbers do not remain frozen in time, but change. Take a look at Appendix 4 and you will see all 9 permutations of the Lo Shu square. If we want to identify one specific permutation, we name it by the number at the center of the square. Thus, the fifth permutation has the number “5” in the center, the sixth has the number “6” and so on.
We have already noted that in a "standard" Lo Shu square the sum of the digits in each column, row and diagonal is 15. This is also true for the permutations "5", "2" and "8".
These numbers are very important, and although we will not go into them in detail, it is enough for you to note that the total sums for each Lo Shu permutation say a lot about the qualities of a given square. For example, all squares whose digits in each direction add up to 15 are considered Earth squares.

The Eight Bagua Trigrams form the basis of all Feng Shui practices. you can use feng shui trigrams to see whether the missing area in the layout is a major or minor problem.
Trigram Qian (QUIN)
This energy represents strength, activity and power. The Close People Zone symbolizes the sky, masculine energy, power and leadership. She represents everyone who is nearby and supports us: neighbors, friends and even our guardian angels. It embraces those who have made our lives happy through selfless acts and services. Older people can also be an important source of help when passing on their experiences to younger generations.
If this area is missed, the resident will often feel helpless and alone in their struggle. The situation in life and health can be quite weak.
Energy sources
Crystals, sculptures with a group of dolphins, a double helix, paintings or figurines of angels, bells, a parasol, a Guan Yin statue.
If the front door faces northwest
This has a very powerful and beneficial effect on male residents. All the male power of Heaven coming into the house carries a sense of respect and power of the Father of the family. He will occupy a worthy position in society, and colleagues and friends will often seek his advice.
Trigram Kun (KUN)
The energy of softness, weakness, constancy and trustworthiness. Like Mother Earth, the Marriage and Relationships zone contains the most vibrant feminine principles: purity, sensitivity and kindness. This is a nourishing energy, sometimes too generous and magnanimous. This zone reflects the entire spectrum of relationships: friendship, marriage, platonic and professional relationships, business partnerships.
When creating a zone, it is important to furnish it with symbols of solidarity, love and generosity. Try to avoid things that express separation and loneliness. If you skip this area in the room layout, it will be difficult - especially for women - to arrange a life together with a partner. Relationships with neighbors and colleagues will often be difficult.
Energy sources
A sculpture of two dolphins or other objects representing the couple, a crystal lamp, minerals or semi-precious stones, red roses, a double helix, a mandala, a Buddha statue, a peach. If your door faces southwest
The Qi energy coming from the southwest carries the fertile energy of late afternoon. This is the time of day when Qi begins to settle and strengthen. She can easily create an atmosphere of warmth and satisfaction. If we consider it as the "late afternoon" of our own lives, it could represent solitude. Such a home would be an ideal place for a couple who wants to enjoy a long and exciting old age.
Trigram Zhen (ZHEN)
This energy is impulsive, attractive and unyielding. Although her zone relates to Family, it is also associated with our biological parents and the people who shaped and still influence our lives: mentors, teachers, leaders, bosses and people in power or high positions. While this zone provides open and accessible energy, it is influenced by our past.
This is a zone of natural order, and it is symbolized by thunder and lightning. We are reminded how important it is to know our roots and draw on their strength. If this zone is missed in the housing layout, health problems and tense family relationships are very likely.
Energy sources
Dolphin sculpture, healthy and resilient plants, flowers, pond inside the house, aquarium, double helix, Chinese bells, dragon, bamboo plant, peach, elephant, trigram ribbon, lightning sign, swastika, crane, male animal.
If the front door faces east
This is where the Dawn Chi comes right into your home. It has a very beneficial effect if you are trying to start a new career, project, or trying to diversify, expand and build on existing work. This Qi, like spring, will bring success to the children of the owner of the house, as they live here at the dawn of their lives.
Trigram Xun (XUN)
The energy of flexibility and progress. Feng Shui element – Wood. It represents the zone of Prosperity. This zone reflects not only financial prosperity, but also luck and happiness. It is a place of happy accidents, often called “coincidences.” It helps you succeed in life.
The word “well-being” refers not only to material things like money, but also to inner wealth (joy, optimism, satisfaction) that has more value than is commonly believed.
If you ignore this zone in the planning, you can expect financial difficulties due to rash actions.
Energy sources
Aquarium, pond inside the house, tenacious and bamboo plants, golden fruits, poster with a waterfall, double spiral, fountain, sculpture with two ducks, other objects displaying two things or animals, mandala, orchids, stones.
If the front door faces southeast
Qi from the southeast entering your home will create a very lively, happy, energetic atmosphere. This is especially conducive to maintaining connections and good communication with the outside world, which can lead to new projects and ambitious endeavors. You can easily let new opportunities into your life. But you need to make sure that you are well organized to achieve your desired goal.
Trigram Kan (KAN)
This is the energy of the most important changes. It is associated with the element of Water in Feng Shui. Because of its close connection with the ocean, the Source of life, it is very powerful. Water reflects the vicissitudes of life, like a stream wandering aimlessly across a landscape. This energy belongs to the Career zone. It shows us what we want to achieve personally and professionally.
This area should be comfortable and tidy to allow energy to flow freely. Cluttered items such as shoes, books, boxes, etc. that are scattered (especially close to the entrance) will hinder progress.
If this area is missed in the layout, the resident will face difficulties in finding the right path in life, and professional goals will be difficult to achieve.
Energy sources
An aquarium, a small fountain in the house, a bowl of water, a mirror, a wave pattern on the walls or door, a poster with a waterfall, a vase, a fish, a small pond inside the house.
If the front door faces north
In this position, your door faces winter, cold and serenity. Residents of the home are likely to feel colder, become more isolated, and begin to worry about threats from the outside world. The cool Qi winds that blow from the north encourage people to remain inactive and not communicate with the world.
Trigram Li (LI)
Energy of adventure and glory. It refers not only to external statues, recognition and honor from the outside world, or people's good attitude towards you. It is also associated with inner light, awareness, self-esteem and self-knowledge.
The Glory Zone in Feng Shui belongs to the Fire element, and its energy supports passions, talents and mental abilities. The Glory Zone is contrasted with the Career Zone, indicating that the path of life ultimately has a goal. This zone encourages us to think about how to give meaning to our lives.
If this zone is ignored, the tenant will pay too much attention to the opinions of others, experience self-doubt and feel undervalued.
Energy sources
Diplomas or trophies, bright lamps, Buddha statue, candles, crystal lamps, double helix, crystals, butterfly mobile, peach. If the front door is facing south
The all-encompassing Fire entering your home “kindles” the home and its residents. You will become sociable, full of life, friendly and cheerful. But it is worth mentioning the opposite effect.
Fire, by its nature, illuminates everything that is in front of it, and tends to exaggerate these things. If you feel unhappy or lack confidence, Fire can enhance these feelings. Remember that Fire charges any atmosphere and, in the worst case, this can cause violent quarrels!
Trigram Gen (GEN)
The energy of trustworthiness, steadfastness and calmness. Like a rock at the edge of the ocean, this is the zone of Knowledge that symbolizes stability and security. It is associated with the element of Earth. Reflection, learning and wisdom are the subject of this zone. It reflects our inner wisdom, self-knowledge, and what can be achieved through our own efforts. She represents strong but passive energy.
This is an ideal area for meditation or arranging a personal library. It is also a good place to study and think, to collect thoughts. It is worth keeping some furniture here, since the area should not be too “dynamic”. If you miss this area in the layout, the tenant will make the same mistakes over and over again because it will be difficult for him to think things through.
Energy sources
Books, mountain paintings, unicorn sculpture, candle, crystal lamp, yin and yang symbol, mandala, minerals or semi-precious stones, Buddha statue, elephant sculpture, Guan Yin, crane, vase, mobile, sun umbrella.
If the front door faces northeast
Often the worst and most threatening cold winds come from the northeast. The icy wind of a Siberian storm coming through your door every morning is the most auspicious start! The strong, deep and penetrating nature of Qi from the northeast can lead to health problems such as colds, persistent infections, bronchitis and sore throats. It is also likely that women will find it difficult to become pregnant in a house where the front door faces northeast.
Trigram Dui (DUI)
The energy of joy, liveliness and communication. Like the bottom of a lake, this energy serves as a mirror of our true essence - the depth of our feelings. Knowing the potential that this energy carries, we can fully use it for our own purposes. The Children's Zone is not only a reflection of our biological children, but also a symbol of development and the future. All the ideas that we want to implement originate here.
If you're planning to open a business, for example, don't underestimate the power of the energy in this zone. This is the place where life and joy are born. When you design this area, let your imagination run wild. This is a place where creative shapes and colors will greatly enhance the flow of energy.
If the Children's area is overlooked in the planning of the room, its occupant will be prone to depression and melancholy, money will be spent on practical things rather than hobbies, and the relationship between parents and children will be difficult.
Energy sources
Crystals, a sculpture of playing dolphins, Chinese bells, fancy paintings, flowering plants, an egg.
