Meaning of the name. The meaning of the word aya What does the name aya mean?
Ayia Napa translated from Greek means “sacred forest”. According to local legend, in ancient times this region was covered with dense forests, where only hunters from nearby villages appeared.
Around the 11th century AD, a certain hunter discovered an icon of the Mother of God in a forest cave, after which at the beginning of the 16th century a monastery was built around it in honor of the Holy Virgin Mary. Until 1790, the area around Ayia Napa was not inhabited by people. The first settlers of this area were former residents of Thessaloniki, who laid the foundation for the history of the village of Ayia Napa.

Maritime Museum
This museum is located in the city municipality building; its exhibition is small, but very interesting. Here you can see shells of mollusks, various fish and sea turtles.
The history of the Municipal Maritime Museum "Thalassa" in Ayia Napa dates back to 1984, when Giorgos Tornaritis founded the "Museum of Sea Life" in Ayia Napa. In 1992, under the influence of Dimitris Pieridis, this museum was transformed into the Municipal Museum of Sea Inhabitants, and then in 2006 into the Thalassa Sea Museum.
The location for the museum, dedicated to the domain of the Hellenic god Poseidon, was not chosen by chance - the seaside town of Ayia Napa, the lion's share of its profits is derived from the sea, sun and sandy beaches. The museum is located in one of the buildings owned by the municipality. Ayia Napa spent 3 million Cypriot pounds on modernizing the museum.
The museum's collections are located on three levels. All of them deserve to devote some of your time to them. The first level is represented by an exhibition of paintings by local artists, a collection of paleontological finds, fossils, shells, and corals.
On the main level of the museum is the main exhibit - "Kyrenia-Eleftheria" - an exact copy of an ancient Greek ship that sank at the end of the 4th century BC. e. off the coast of Northern Cyprus. In 1965, Andreas Karjelu, a sailor and sea sponge catcher, discovered the wreck of a ship and 80 amphorae at the bottom of the sea. Kariel managed to take pictures of his find using a simple photographic apparatus, and then he lifted several amphorae from the bottom. The discovery was so serious that government intervention was required. In 1968, work began on raising the ship. When the lifting work was completed, the question arose about cleaning and preserving five tons of wood, which was 75% water and resembled a wet sponge. In one of the utility rooms of the Kerynia fortress, they set up something like a swimming pool, where parts of the ship were placed. There they were thoroughly washed and cleared of salt and sand. The ship parts, which had already passed the cleaning stage, were placed on special disks in fresh water, where they awaited chemical treatment.
Over the course of two years, specialists from various branches of science, exerting a lot of effort, made the recently deformed six thousand scattered parts of the ship suitable for assembly.
Now this ancient ship is kept in the Kerynia fortress (on the territory of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). And for the start of the 2004 Olympics, an exact copy of this ancient merchant ship was specially built. A unique experiment of world significance related to the study of loading and stowing amphorae and other cargo on an ancient ship was carried out in the old port of Limassol. All work was carried out according to an original program developed by the Kerynia-Chrisokava Cultural Center in collaboration and under the supervision of American maritime archaeologists Susan Katzev and Leina Sowiny. Replicas of 388 ancient amphorae and 29 millstones made from volcanic stone, as well as other items carried by ancient ships, were loaded onto the Kerynia Eleftheria, a replica of a ship that sank off the coast of Kerynia and was found four decades ago.
In 2004 - the year Cyprus joined the European Union - "Kerynia - Eleftheria" became the main exhibit of the maritime museum in Ayia Napa.
No less interesting is an exact copy of the papirella boat, a Greek vessel of the Middle Stone Age. There is also a large collection of archaeological finds from the ancient Cypriot period: vases, figurines, masks and other artifacts.
The lower level features a huge collection of exhibits: stuffed marine mammals, birds, life-size turtles, fossilized skeletons of fish and other marine organisms. The owners of the museum especially note that “all exhibits were collected after their natural death in their natural environment.” Not a single inhabitant of the sea gave up his life just to end up in a museum.
In one of the halls of the museum, Cypriot historians and archaeologists recreated the seabed as it was during the time of the dinosaurs (130-65 million years ago). Among the museum's exhibits are sea inhabitants fossilized over many centuries, unusual shellfish and “stuffed” fish (if you can call them that).
In one of the halls, a fragment from the life of a sea turtle is recreated. The museum curators decided to reflect one of the most important moments of a turtle’s life—the laying of eggs in the coastal sand.
"Thalassa" offers its visitors figurines of idols, vases, sculptures, ceramics, marine-themed carved dishes dating back to 9000 BC. - 1878 AD The museum exhibits paintings by Cypriot and Greek marine painters of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Most of the museum's exhibits can be seen on TV, but only here can you come face to face with a toothy shark or an outlandish fish that lived off the coast of Cyprus millions of years ago.
In addition to the above, in the museum you will see stuffed seabirds, admire starfish and sea urchins. Photos and films about the sea will help you understand the secrets of the sea depths. The museum has a small souvenir shop. Inhabitants of the deep sea - crabs, lobsters, corals, crustaceans, sea sponges, shells - are waiting for you at the Thalassa Maritime Museum.

Monastery of the Virgin Mary
The pride of Ayia Napa is the 16th-century monastery with a marble fountain and the Chapel of the Latins. A Venetian-era monastery that was erected in honor of the Virgin Mary around 1500 and has functioned as an Ecumenical Conference Center since 1978, serving the churches of both Cyprus and the Middle East.
According to one legend, in the 6th century, in the cave where the church is now located, one hunter found a miraculous icon Holy Mother of God. This image began to be called the “Icon of Ayia Napa,” and huge masses of pilgrims began to come to it to worship. The name Ayia Napa itself means “holy forest” because a long time ago the area where the city and its surroundings are now located was covered with a dense forest, and it was holy because of the icon. The cave in which the icon was located served as a reliable shelter for people for many years. Legend says that once upon a time, people, having taken refuge here from pirates, after a long stay in it, were dying of thirst, they prayed to the Mother of God asking her to help them. After the prayer, the Virgin Mary appeared and pointed to a source of fresh water that appeared in the dungeon. This source still quenches people's thirst.
In the 14th century, the cave was turned into a church. There is a stone rosette above the church door; the church itself consists of two rooms, which are connected by pointed arches. In the 16th century, one room was used as a Catholic chapel; remains of paintings have been preserved on its walls to this day. The main entrance leads to the monastery courtyard, which consists of three parallel passages. In the courtyard there is an octagonal fountain, decorated with garlands, images of faces, vases of flowers, animals, it is covered with a dome, supported by four columns.
One day a young girl from a wealthy Venetian family came to the monastery, who did not want to marry without love and decided to become a nun. Thanks to her, a fountain and a two-story building appeared in the monastery. Until 1668, the monastery in Agia Napa was exclusively for women. After 1668 the monastery became a men's monastery. In 1758 the monastery was closed. It was only in 1800 that three monks settled in the monastery again. In 1813, the monastery of Agia Napa was completely restored.
After some time, a small village appeared next to the monastery, which turned into a fairly large town and took its name from the monastery - Ayia Napa.
Now the Ayia Napa monastery complex consists of the church itself, a domed gazebo with a fountain (the fountain is not operational), a two-story tower and a fragment of a stone fortification wall. Also noteworthy is the tree growing right at the entrance to the historical complex. A giant tree - a sycamore with a wide trunk and powerful branches that are so heavy that special supports were erected for them.
Another church of Ayia Napa, already modern, is located very close to the monastery. It is also named after the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is believed that this church contains miraculous icon Mother of God, who helps women get rid of serious illnesses and find the joy of motherhood.

The main task is not to arouse spontaneous antipathy in anyone. Therefore, you should pay special attention to the unity of style, soft lines and, just as important, general external neatness. An inappropriate detail in clothing makes the same unpleasant impression as a worn-out, stale part of the suit. Try to learn to understand styles. Otherwise, the desire for a certain average type can lead to you looking like a “gray mouse”.Compatibility of the name Aya, manifestation in love
Aya, your self-sufficiency makes you a person for whom love is not a “life necessity.” You are extremely picky in any connections, be it friendship or closer relationships. In both cases, the partner must meet your ideal criteria absolutely, otherwise you can easily do without him. But if you still find a person who fits the “bar” you set, then you surrender to the feeling completely, selflessly and recklessly, which can be a pleasant surprise for your partner, misled by your external closeness and aloofness.Motivation
You are a “closed” person. All aspirations and desires are focused on one’s own personality. Therefore, when making any decision, you tend to choose what will most contribute to your growth and improvement. And each such choice increases the distance between you and the world around you.Over time, this “shell” becomes thicker, and the possibility of “coming out” becomes more and more unrealistic. But even the strongest shell may one day fail to withstand external pressure and burst. And then, despite all your outstanding abilities, you will find yourself defenseless, like a newly hatched chick.
Neither intelligence nor theoretical knowledge, no matter how significant they are, cannot replace the ability to communicate with people, the skill of “interpenetration”, without which life is impossible.
Try to learn to view your individual qualities not as a product that can be “sold”, but as a tool for working in a team. Self-respect, of course, is “worth a lot,” but the affection of others is not a trifle.
