Chernigov historical places. Sights of Chernigov: photos and descriptions
The northernmost Ukrainian regional center, the city of Chernigov, the historical center of Left Bank Ukraine, is one of the most significant and largest ancient Slavic cities in Kievan Rus. And although the first documentary mention of Chernigov dates back to 907, archaeological finds confirm that the very first settlements appeared in this place at least in the 4th millennium BC. e. So it is not surprising that the Chernihiv region preserves numerous ancient monuments and unique attractions that attract thousands of tourists. There are more than 250 of them in Chernigov and they date back to the 11th-20th centuries. It is not for nothing that this Ukrainian city, after Kyiv and Lvov, is one of the “historical cities of Ukraine”. Many of these attractions are included today in “Ancient Chernigov” - the State Chernigov Architectural and Historical Reserve. And the first place on his list is occupied by the Transfiguration Cathedral - one of the oldest Ukrainian churches.
Chernigov Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral
This beautiful ancient five-domed eight-pillar temple is the oldest surviving monument of architecture of Kievan Rus, a Chernigov landmark. Its construction was started by Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich back in the 30s of the early 11th century. However, it was suspended due to his death and continued only in the 50s. Immediately after its consecration, this Chernigov temple became the main cathedral of the city. During its centuries-old history, the Transfiguration Cathedral has experienced many restorations and reconstructions, however, even now in its decor you can see the original frescoes, columns and carved slabs, allowing you to judge its interior decoration ancient times. The shrines of the cathedral are the ashes of the great Chernigov princes of the times of Kievan Rus, preserved here, including Prince Igor.
Chernigovsky detynets (Val)
Among the most ancient sights of Chernigov is Detinets, the oldest part of the city, which is a high hill on the banks of the Desna River. In the 17th century there was a fortified settlement here, which gave rise to the city. It was here that in ancient times there was a complex of defensive structures and the princely fortress of the city, the princely court, the houses of the boyars, clergy and military squads were located. After the reconstruction carried out in the 19th century and the demolition of the fortress walls as unnecessary, Detinets was rebuilt into a city boulevard. Monuments to outstanding personalities such as T. Shevchenko and A. Pushkin were erected here.
And today Detynets, with twelve cast-iron bastion cannons dating back to the 17th century located here, is rightfully considered the calling card of Chernigov.
Museum of V. Tarnovsky
There are many museums in Chernigov. The most famous of them is historical. This landmark of the city bears the name of V. Tarnovsky, a famous Kachanovsky entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded the first Chernigov Museum of Ukrainian Antiquities in 1902. In the fall of 1925, together with other Chernigov museums, including the museum of the Chernigov Archival Commission, dated 1896, the Taranovsky Museum became part of the Chernigov State Regional Museum.
Today the Chernigov Historical Museum is located on Val, in an ancient city building - the former house of the governor. Unfortunately, it was significantly damaged during the war, and its exhibition has not been fully restored. However, even today it contains about 130 thousand exhibits telling about the history of Chernihiv region and the city itself from ancient times to the present.
The real decoration of the exhibition presented in the historical museum are archaeological finds, early printed books, and also rare documents and antiquities that date back to the Cossack era. The diorama “Mezinskaya site”, which tells about the life of primitive people in the Chernihiv region (in the village of Mezin), in the Late Paleolithic era.
Anthony's Caves
And one of the most mysterious and unusual, and also ancient, attractions of Chernigov are the so-called Anthony Caves. This is an amazing underground monastery, which is located at a depth of more than 11 meters in the thickness of the Boldin Mountains. Founded in 1069 by Anthony of Pechersk, thanks to whom the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra appeared in Ukraine, the Anthony Caves have been giving birth to incredible legends and myths for 900 years. So, they say that the spirit of the Black Monk wanders along the long passages (more than 350 meters) and corridors of these caves, and a person who descends into this amazing place changes from the inside.
Be that as it may, the Anthony Caves attract thousands of pilgrims and tourists and are among the most famous Chernigov attractions. Archaeological excavations are still ongoing in these extraordinary dungeons.
Boldiny Mountains in Chernigov
Of particular interest are the Boldiny Mountains themselves - a unique memorial necropolis of Chernigov, its important landmark. Famous Ukrainian writers, ethnographers and teachers found their peace here. Among them are M. Kotsyubinsky, M. Verbitsky, L. Glebov, as well as representatives of noble Ukrainian families: the Kochubeys, the Miloradovichs, and the Skoropadskys. They even say that in one of the local mounds lies the ashes of Ilya Muromets himself!
In ancient times, pagan sanctuaries were located here. So this place is really special. Today the Chernigov Memorial of Glory is located here, and the Boldin Mountains themselves are also called the Hill of Glory.

The ancient symbol of Chernigov, the Church of St. Catherine in the Ukrainian Baroque style, greets everyone entering the city from Kyiv. The temple is located on the opposite hill from Detinets, on the Alley of Heroes. The church was founded on the site of an ancient temple from the period of Kievan Rus at the expense of the brothers Semyon and Yakov Lizogub. The reason was the will of the brothers' father: he asked to build a church in memory of the heroism shown during the storming of the Turkish fortress of Azov in 1696 by their grandfather Yakov Lizogub and the Cossacks of the Chernigov regiment. Catherine's Church was closed during the Soviet period, in 1975-80 it was restored and the exhibition of the Museum of Folk and Decorative Arts of the Chernihiv region was placed. The last time the building was restored was in 1999, so the station does not have an ideal, but passable appearance. The place is very colorful for photographs, because it is not crowded, and there are pigeons and crows scurrying around.
A trip to Chernigov is an amazing opportunity to travel back in time. It is not for nothing that it is called the “city of legends”: the spirit of Kievan Rus and the ancient Chernigov principality still emanates here... Above the Desna you can still hear about the exploits of the times of the Hetmanate and the glorious Cossacks, as well as about the spiritual treasures of St. Anthony of Pechersk. By the way, this is one of the cleanest cities in our state! Sights of Chernigov!
In the north-east of Ukraine lies a fertile, picturesque valley where the Desna and Strizhen rivers merge. Here, many centuries ago, the Prince of Cherniga founded the glorious city of Chernigov, which was destined to repeatedly influence the course of world history. Today it is a small regional center, however, Chernigov was once one of largest cities of Kievan Rus and successfully competed even with Kiev itself. Over the centuries-old history, various rulers and invaders have left a lot of attractions in Chernigov as souvenirs, so it’s worth coming here, you won’t regret it. Moreover, getting to Chernigov will not be difficult: the city is located only 140 km from Kyiv. You can get to Chernigov from the capital by one of the minibuses that run from the Lesnaya metro station. Train lovers can also get to Chernigov by rail. Starting in 2011, Chernigov promised to restore the river port, so that soon it will be possible to get to Chernigov even by water.
What immediately catches the eye of a visitor to Chernigov is a large number of parks, public gardens and other green areas. Indeed, according to official statistics, the air in Chernihiv is considered the most environmentally friendly in all of Ukraine. Therefore, even an ordinary walk around Chernigov will bring not only joy, but also health. Here, despite the completely modern appearance of the station, streets and business center of the city, a feeling of antiquity takes possession of the tourist. Moreover, the residents of Chernigov are sensitive to their history, build all sorts of monuments, and design new tourist routes Chernigov, they restore ancient architecture to the best of their ability. Therefore, there are a great many attractions in Chernigov and all are worthy of attention.
The most striking sights of Chernigov are located in the historical center of Chernigov - Princely Detinets, which is also called Val. Once upon a time there was the famous Chernigov fortress, which at one time brought a lot of problems to the Mongol-Tatars, Poles, Lithuanians and God knows what other conquerors. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to the fortress itself, leaving for us only the Val itself, on which 12 cast-iron cannons are erected: they were once given to the city by Emperor Peter 1, thus thanking the Chernigov Cossacks for their courage in the famous Battle of Poltava. However, it is here that almost a quarter of all survivors of the Mongol-Tatar invasion are concentrated architectural monuments. You just need to see this antique!
A magnificent panorama of Chernigov opens from Val: the city itself in the valley is small and from the historical to the modern center is just a stone's throw away. Looking out over the picturesque surroundings from Detinets, it is impossible not to notice Ekaterininskaya church, which is built on a promontory directly opposite the Val. This church is one of the symbols and attractions of Chernigov. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century by the wealthy Cossack Lizogub in honor of his grandfather, who took part in the capture of the Azov fortress. From the outside, the Catherine Church looks like new. However, the services here are not perfect: inside the temple there is a folk art museum with a good exhibition.
On the territory of Detinets itself there is unique temple- Spassky Cathedral. Its construction dates back to the 11th century! This is one of the most ancient buildings that has come down to us in such good condition. It is believed that the temple was founded by the son of Prince Vladimir Mstislav. Here is the grave of the famous Prince Igor. Boriso-Gleb Cathedral, located nearby, is a hundred years younger than Spassky. It was built by Prince David Svyatoslavovich, who is now canonized. Today there is an exposition of a historical museum with a lot of interesting exhibits found during the excavations of Detinets.
Walking around the historical center of Chernigov, you can see many fragments of ancient masonry: these were also once buildings of the princely era, but only archaeologists, who quite often conduct their research here, can say anything about them.
Of course, the impressions of a trip to Chernigov are not limited to an overview of ancient temples and ruins. There is still a lot of interesting things here, both old and quite modern. In general, Chernigov is rightfully considered a city of churches, so you can often meet pilgrims here, especially during major Orthodox holidays.
A special place among the attractions of Chernigov is occupied by a nondescript-looking mansion located not far from the citadel of the former fortress. This is Mazepa's House. Rumor has it that here is the original portrait depicted on the 10-hryvnia bill, the already middle-aged Hetman Ivan Mazepa kept his mistress Motrya Kochubey, having previously killed her father. There are many residents of Chernigov who will swear that they saw the ghost of Motri wandering in the night along the ancient ramparts on the night before Ivan Kupala... In general, there are many legends about ghouls, singing tombstones, hidden treasures, and the restless dead. It’s worth coming to Chernigov to hear them!
One day is really not enough to explore all the sights of Val: there are many architectural monuments from different centuries, which are part of the single historical and architectural museum complex “Ancient Chernigov”. The buildings of the princely, Cossack, Catherine and Nicholas eras are mixed here - the diversity of styles at first simply knocks you off your feet! It’s a strange thing: visiting these ancient monuments does not become boring at all and the acuity of perception remains the same. You will hardly want to miss anything: the old cemetery, the Archbishop's house, the governor's residence, the Cossack office, monasteries, pre-revolutionary gymnasiums and many, many other monuments, each of which hides its own history...
Having wandered around the Val to your heart’s content, you should go to the modern center of Chernigov. The road from Detinets will take at most 20 minutes. Having moved to the Catherine Church, it is worth walking along the Alley of Heroes: the names of Chernigov heroes who fought are immortalized here during the Civil War and World War II. Next to the Alley of Heroes is the main street of Chernihiv - Mira Avenue. Here, too, you can take a nice walk, especially since several beautiful examples of architecture from the early 20th century remain on the avenue: the building of the diocesan brotherhood, which now houses the regional philharmonic society, the former Chernigov Alexandrovskaya hotel, which has now become the history department of the Chernigov Pedagogical University, the music school, which was originally a school for children with vision problems.... Here, on the avenue, you can see two memorial stones: one on the site of the former house of the famous fable master Glibov, the second - where the Chernigov hotel “Tsargrad” once stood. This hotel hosted Shevchenko, Pushkin and many other cultural celebrities.
Having walked to the end of the Alley of Heroes, you find yourself on... Red Square. Yes, yes, Chernigov has its own Red Square, which has served as the modern center of the city since the beginning of the 19th century. This area was once called Pyatnitsky Field, and it belonged to convent. Then the field fell within the boundaries of Chernigov, first a small magistrate was built here (now a branch of the National Bank), then a building for the bureaucratic department (now the city administration is located here). The square has been quite intensively developed over the course of a century and today represents an impressive architectural ensemble, combining ancient traditions and the rhythm of a modern city.
Nightlife in Chernigov
Naturally, Chernigov changed along with the world. Those who are little interested in history and sights will also find somewhere to relax in Chernigov for every taste: nightclubs in Chernigov have a thematic division and here you can get to both a disco of the 80s and an acid party; restaurants in Chernigov at quite moderate prices they offer excellent cuisine, both national and European; saunas and baths in Chernigov are especially popular in the cold season; high quality equipment and almost homely comfort provide these establishments with a constant influx of customers. And, of course, having been here, you cannot deny yourself the pleasure of drinking fresh draft Chernigov beer in some cozy pub. Its taste differs very favorably from the bottled version.
Using the services of a Chernigov excursion bureau or travel agency, you can book an interesting excursion around the city, because there is a lot to see in the Chernigov region. But this is a topic for a completely different article...
In any case, a trip to Chernigov will leave behind unforgettable impressions and wonderful memories. This ancient city managed to carry its individuality through the centuries and remain the same mighty city, before which even Kyiv princes. Come to Chernigov and see everything for yourself.
