Chronicles of Book Walkers. Milena Zavoichinskaya - Higher School of Librarians
Milena Zavoichinskaya’s book “Chronicles of Book Walkers” is the final one in the series about the Higher School of Librarians. The events of the novel develop rapidly. The small volume covers a fairly long period of time, the plot is full of surprises. It is noteworthy that this part of the book will not only provide an opportunity to be surprised, but also to sympathize with the main characters, perhaps at some moments your eyes will sting from tears.
The main character Kira, who once accidentally ended up in this school, is now preparing to complete her educational process. I have to defend my thesis, which, as it turns out, I still have to live to see. After all, this girl is not one of those who lives quietly, she will always find adventures.
Kira’s personal life was confused, and then she received a blow from someone she didn’t expect, and such a blow that she almost died. It’s just unknown who will suffer more from the consequences of this later. Not only did I have to miss school, but now I need to keep an eye on the dragon eggs, from which little dragons should soon hatch.
Longtime admirer Karel continues to woo Kira and has clear success. Everything would be fine if I didn’t have to risk my life again, scaring all my loved ones. And then she will travel to Earth and complete an important task, where Karel will fall into an old trap. The girl will have a serious and painful conversation with her former lover Ivar. But if she could have predicted earlier how everything would end up, she would have been very surprised.

Higher School of Librarians. Chronicle of Book Walkers
Chapter 1
About the unpredictable consequences of rash actions and that you shouldn’t get in the way of angry derkhans
There is never a good morning, even if it is the morning of the first day of autumn. And it is especially unkind if the day before you had fun with friends until late. And even if the hangover doesn’t torment you, you still want to sleep...
A black-haired, shaggy monster crawled down from the next bed, groaning, hobbled over to the kitchen cabinet and hungrily fell to the jug of water. I watched my neighbor through my eyelashes and categorically did not want to get up.
“Get up, witch,” the monster creaked.
“Nope,” I responded sluggishly.
“Let’s go to the shower,” Lola rubbed her face. - The distribution is coming soon, we need to get the textbooks. And Ivar will also appear. We need to prevent a fight.
– Do you think... it will? – I sighed, remembering how the Fiend once dug me out of the shower stall to look at my hand.
“Yeah-ah-ah...” Lolina yawned protractedly, covering her mouth with her elegant palm. – It’s with you that he’s gentle, but otherwise he’s the highest derkhan. To be beaten by Rivalis today.
“Listen,” I said thoughtfully, “what do you think, is it at least theoretically possible that Ivar would go against the traditions of the family for my sake?” He will let him go, although this is not practiced and is impossible, and will not care about the fact that he needs two boys. What if I basically can’t reproduce boys? I'm a witch, girls like me are born. After all, the gift is transmitted through the female line.
- Nope, Kiryush. And don't dream. Even in my family, traditions are sacred. No options!
“Okay,” I nodded slowly. - Well, if we allow for a tiny chance that if I cannot accept the fate prepared for the wife of the head of the Stensi family, then for my sake Ivar will refuse the inheritance and... Well, I don’t know. Will we live somewhere together, not dependent on anyone?
– Do you believe in this yourself? – the neighbor snorted mockingly. “What, for the sake of you, a poor, rootless human girl, will the highest derkhan from an ancient noble family give up a colossal fortune, vast territories and a ducal title?” Seriously?!
“Well...” I looked down, “in books, fairy-tale princes usually do just that, if there is no other way to be with the girl they love.”
- The fairy-tale fool is you, forgive me! – the harmful Derkhan laughed. - Kir, sometimes you blurt out something, whether you stand or fall. It seems like an adult girl, she managed to have a son with an elven appearance and older than herself in years, but you believe in fairy tales.
“I see,” I sank. - This means that the Bunny will be beaten today, but at the same time, a priori, nothing good will shine for me in the future with the Fiend. Shine!
It was under such “rosy” thoughts that we gathered and preened ourselves. Then Teltina ran in, and the three of us went to the lawn in front of the main building of the VSB. There was already a table with a “globe” there, schoolchildren were arriving, anticipating the next entertainment. All our guys, except Ivar, were already in place. Slightly rumpled, with red eyes from lack of sleep, but overall quite cheerful. Eh, I wish I could patent my anti-hangover potion! Just a mega thing!
After exchanging greetings, we positioned ourselves so that we could see everything that would happen. I wonder who will join our ranks this year...
Everything went as usual. The rector's welcoming speech, timid first-year students cautiously unwinding the "globe", their joy or disappointment depending on which department they ended up in. There were surprisingly few magicians this year. A whole bunch of future detectives, a few giraffes, science fiction writers and a little bit of people from other faculties. There were no action films from the fantasy genre at all, which was strange. Even the head of the school expressed his surprise, and Master Lucas Arron was completely puzzled. No, the stern dean of militants, of course, did not say anything, but it was clear from his face that he was perplexed. Is he not going to have his first year this year? How is this possible?
Having watched the distribution to the end, our entire company filtered inside the main building in order to quickly get the schedule and books. We weren’t the only ones who were so smart, so there was already a small queue. Then the library, huge piles of textbooks (I, as usual, have the most). This year it was easier to carry all this wealth to the hostel. Well, we’re kind of almost cool – levitation, telekinesis and all that. So we walked from the main building to the residential buildings, accompanied by stacks of books floating behind us, to the delight of first-year students, to the envy of non-magicians, and as a reminder to those who had forgotten that they could do this too. Ha! It’s just that Karel and I have Annushka, who, even in a world without magic, beckoned luggage with her finger, and not carried it in her hands. A good example is an incentive!

Slightly rumpled, with red eyes from lack of sleep, but overall quite cheerful. Eh, I wish I could patent my anti-hangover potion! Just a mega thing!
Having watched the distribution to the end, our entire company filtered inside the main building in order to quickly get the schedule and books. Everyone had their own plans for this day. I was anxiously awaiting Ivar's arrival. I felt a little guilty, but at the same time I was angry, nervous and afraid. In short, a complete set of girlish reflection. Some of the guys needed to go to the city on business and shopping, others just for a walk, and I was going to visit Larissa. Otherwise they abandoned the poor housekeeper and went about their business.
However, everything went completely wrong... Namely, Ivar Stensi appeared to the people.
Our whole friendly gang gathered on the lawn between the dorm buildings, so that we could then fall out of the school gates together. And it was at that moment that Derkhan appeared with Gavryusha on his shoulder. The monster was walking with bags from the main building, probably having just arrived at the teleportation tower, and when he saw us, he waved his hand. To be honest, my soul sank, and my first thought was: where and how to hide Rivalis’ ring. Because... because it’s scary, damn it!
- Kira! - Having caught up, the guy called out to me in his usual detached manner. And you can’t say that you’re bored. He was probably still offended that I left him. - Guys, hello!
Gavryusha also waved his paw at us, raising his tail in a friendly manner and depicting with his muzzle something like a lemur smile. The people responded in a discordant chorus, everyone clearly felt out of place.
“Hi,” I smiled, getting more and more nervous. Oh, what will happen now...
- No... I don’t understand! — the Fiend said, looking at my hand.
Y-s-s! Saw! Right away...
“Ivar, this is...” I began to mumble, but no one was going to listen to me.
- Rivalis! - he barked, throwing the bags on the ground and sending his familiar there. “Did I warn you, you big-eared bastard?” I asked in a good way... Like I tried to communicate with a normal, adequate guy...
Derkhan's face began to change rapidly. Scales crawled across the cheeks, the jaw began to move forward, and the shoulders began to expand. The shirt cracked...
- Ivar, wait! - I shouted, clutching his hand. - Let's talk, I'll explain everything now. Is not…
- Kir-ra! — the already fearful monster growled at me, shaking me off and tearing off the pieces of his shirt.
The guys were saying something, the frightened Gavryusha was squealing in his bestial language, Karel tried to intervene. Lolina, gesturing wildly, also loudly explained to her fellow tribesman that nothing could be solved by fighting, and he needed to discuss everything with me. That nothing like that actually happened, that he misunderstood. Yes, I screamed the same thing. But... The Fiend was completely blown away. He didn’t even try to listen to our words, ignoring not only the guys, but also me. Everything that I explained and explained to him, he simply did not hear or did not want to hear.
And then he lunged at Reeve, and it was scary. Really scary! Because the slender, thin elf had nothing to oppose in a fist fight to a scaly monster with spikes on his shoulders and elbows. But why not use combat spells against a friend?
The boys intervened, trying to pull the Fiend away from Rivalis. Evart flew off with a slashed chest, and a crumpled Jurgis landed nearby. Karel, Maldin and Gaston, the three of them, hung on the brutal derkhan... Ivar lost control of himself completely and completely, he was not fighting with his friends now, he was... killing.
It was so wild and unpredictable that none of us even thought of putting up shields. After all, we weren’t fighting the undead, but Ivar, our good friend. With one of us! No one could have imagined that this would happen. The bunny, of course, was preparing for the fact that he would get it in the jaw, like from Karel, but then he would explain, and everything would go back to normal. No one even thought that the Fiend might fall into a berserker state and stop perceiving reality.
Students who witnessed the incident were screaming around in panic. The robe of one of the teachers flashed...
- Ivar! You will kill them! — I screamed in despair, rushing towards the derkhan.
What was I hoping for? The fact that he won’t touch me? That he loves me and cannot harm me? How can I reach his mind, blinded by rage? Shall I distract you? Can I save a minute for my friends? I don’t know myself... I just got incredibly scared and tried to do at least something, because it was because of me...
- Ivar! Stop it please! Listen to me...
Without looking back, Derkhan put his bent left hand back to block my path, and I ran into this hand with acceleration, not having time to slow down or deviate. Considering our height difference, the huge spike on the transformed battle monster's elbow pierced my neck.
I don’t know what happened then... I also heard the girl’s heart-rending screams, gurgled a couple of times with my torn throat, and the world began to spin and fade away. It seems that I died, at least the light at the end of the long dark corridor was beckoning, calling... I only had to take a few steps. Just a little bit and I'll see what's shining there. I would like to believe that I will go to where good girls go after death. After all, I didn’t have time to sin that much. But those who say that at the moment of death your whole life flashes before your eyes are lying. Nothing happened, there was only an unbearable tearing pain in the neck, and then this calling light...
There was no way to leave. An unknown force pulled me back, holding me back, forcing me to return. The light moved away until it died out completely, and I fell into black oblivion. And it was damn insulting! I could go to Heaven, if, of course, restless witches are accepted there. And so...
From time to time I could hear quiet voices from the darkness.
“I’ll just take a look and leave,” someone said crackingly.
“Yes, she will wake up,” a gentle girlish voice answered him with a sigh. - Don’t you know Kiryushka? She's a lively person. People like her don't give up so easily. Look, even though she’s human, she’ll outlive you and me. Moreover, a master's degree...
I didn’t hear what some master did there, I again floated away into my black oblivion.
And then I suddenly woke up from a feeling of wild hunger. It felt like I hadn't eaten for several days. Wincing, I sneezed and opened my eyes. She stared at the white ceiling in bewilderment, then glanced around. Oh how! I’m in the infirmary... Interesting, it means she didn’t die, but these evil aesculapians are starving the girl. Complete chaos!
I fumbled, rolled over on my side with a groan, pulled the pillow higher and, mentally groaning from terrible weakness, barely moved to a sitting position. Phew! It was so hard... It was as if I had run a marathon, and I was already perspiring from the effort.
Having caught my breath, I straightened out my hospital gown, began to recall in my memory the events that led me to this place, and, remembering, shivered. Ivar, the fight, the injured guys, me, running into the elbow of a maddened derkhan... Oh, mom!
The hand itself rushed to the neck and began to feel it. So, my throat is fine, no bandages, no scars, which means the doctors were on time and patched me up. It's good that there is teleportation. Never in my life would they have saved me - with my throat torn out - on Earth. Neither paramedics nor intensive care would help. Only a miracle!
While I was examining the injured part of the body and reflecting, the door silently opened and Karel entered the room.
- Ki.. Kira! - he exhaled and rushed towards me. - I woke up! How did you... How dare you die?!
In an instant, my partner crossed the room, fell to his knees next to the bed, grabbed my palm and pressed it to his cheek. And he had such an expression on his face... And you won’t understand what is more: wild joy that I came to my senses, fear or anger that I was again (damn, it’s true - again) about to leave him forever.
- Hey! — I was indignant in a whisper, because I couldn’t listen to my voice. - Why are you shouting? Well, there was an accident, well, I got hurt... For the first time, or what? Why yell right away? Die? Ha! Can't wait!
He did not have time to answer, because, having heard his voice, Rivalis and Maldin immediately burst into the room, followed by everyone else, except Ivar.
Noise, commotion, Lola and Tina sobbing with happiness and relief, Bunny beaming with an insane happy smile, excited guys...
- You are shameless! - Lolina howled, sobbing loudly with relief and smearing tears mixed with black mascara on her cheeks. - How dare you die?! Scared us all! You have neither shame nor conscience! And Ivar? He is a fool, of course, a jealous psycho. But do you have any idea how he felt? He killed his beloved girl...
- Lola! - Also quietly sobbing, Teltina pulled back her enraged friend. After which she thrust a handkerchief into the sobbing derkhana, and she blew her nose noisily, not caring about all her aristocratic manners.
- Hey how are you? - Rivalis asked, pushing Karel, who was clinging to my hand, with his knee and sat down on the edge of the bed.
- I am hungry! — I whispered, thinking. - And why on earth did you bury me?
After all, I didn’t go into that tunnel into the light? She didn't leave! This means she didn’t die, but just rolled a little on the edge. People over there have been lying in a coma for years, and no one is in a hurry to write them off. And when you die, you can imagine everything. Why do they talk like I'm a zombie? Died... Killed...
My last question silenced everyone. The guys started looking at each other, and I didn’t like it at all. Frowning, I stared demandingly into my partner’s eyes. And just let him try to lie to me!
“Kiryush, it wasn’t us who buried him,” he answered with a sigh, looking away. - It was you who died. When the masters and the doctor arrived, you... Well, in general, you were already dead. For real…
“Yeah,” I blinked, realizing. Still not on the verge... - That is, clinical death. Got it. So, it was not in vain that I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. How did it all end? Are you okay?
- Why are we? - Jurgis, who was shifting at the threshold, shrugged and stroked his tearful friend on the head. “They took us here too, patched us up and released us in the evening.” This is not the first time they have been so wounded. Reeve suffered the most; he was kept for a day.
- Bunny, how are you? - I asked the elf.
“The main thing is that the ears are in place,” Rivalis flashed his teeth in a smile. “You can’t sew them back into place, and new ones don’t grow back.” And everything else is nonsense.
- And... Ivar? - I asked a question. - You made it up?
“Yes, we made peace,” the elf’s smile faded. - True, he... avoids us. Only he comes here to you as if he were going to work, sits and watches. And if one of us appears, he immediately leaves. Karel and I explained everything to him.
- And I! - Lola, calmed down, intervened. “I told him everything, about the fact that you were scared and panicked, and that this engagement was not real, but within the framework of your agreement with Rivalis.” And that you wanted to talk to him first, but didn’t have time, since he arrived late. And he…
“When he saw you there... on the grass, covered in blood, with your throat torn... - Maldin spoke, finding his words hard, - as if he had gone crazy... He immediately took on a human form and... screamed like that... And he kept staring at his hands, and they after all, in the blood... They also took him to the infirmary, pumped him full of sedatives and put him to sleep for a day.
Everyone looked down, and I had the feeling that they were not telling me something, but I didn’t press. They’ll let me out and I’ll find out everything myself.
“I tried to explain to him that this was a tragic accident,” Karel stroked my hand. “After all, everyone saw what happened.” There were a lot of witnesses there. But he... blames himself. Said that…
“Karel, don’t,” Teltina called out to him quietly. - Let them talk for themselves. You saw what was happening to him. No need…
The mood in the room dropped noticeably, and I decided to change the conversation:
- Will they feed me? - she whispered demandingly. “I feel like I haven’t eaten for three days.”
- A week, dear! - Rivalis snorted. “But I’m afraid there’s nothing for you except some broth.”
- Kira, how can you be so heartless? - Tina said reproachfully. - We were worried, Ivar was going crazy, and you were talking about food...
“Tin, you were worried, but I died,” I responded, stopping smiling. - What's the point if I now start to get nervous, worry, and reflect again? Somehow I don’t want to go to the next world again. I’ll go away and refresh myself... And in general, it’s better to smile. I still have time to cry.
“Sorry, Kiryush,” the elf blushed and looked down. - I didn’t think. It’s all nerves and... I feel sorry for the monster, we’re friends after all. He's crazy, but such a miserable crazy person. And he has...” She raised her hand to her hair, but did not finish speaking.
Well, you... actually,” I exhaled.
But it worked! Kiryush, it worked! You... ahem... were so fucked up that you arched, and then... Well, in short, your heart started racing. True, I got so much trouble from the masters later, oh! As I remember the dressing down that they gave me... The rector almost killed me, the chief healer hissed and promised that she would not treat a bastard like me who mocked the corpse of her partner. Annushka... It turned out to be easier with her, she stood up and explained everything to them. You know, it seems to me that she has been in your world or similar ones.
What if I got charred by your “twice”?! - I clasped my hands. She looked at the spoon, snatched it from the hands of her “breadwinner” and cracked him on the forehead. - It's lightning! Holy porcupines! Yes, my braids probably stood on end at full length from such resuscitation. How did I not fall into ashes?!
Sorry,” his beloved partner apologized, rubbing his forehead, which had been damaged by the cutlery. - I’m telling you, I was in a state of passion. Cyrus, you can’t imagine how terrified I was. I didn’t understand anything at all, I just saw your bloody, lifeless body and understood that if you were gone, then I had no reason to live. I just can't do it without you. I panicked so much that... But, in general, I’m not such a strong elementalist that I could release a discharge of such power that could incinerate. I don’t understand how I actually managed to create lightning. And don’t worry, I’ve already been punched in the face for this. Twice…
Who? - I burst out laughing.
Rivalis and Maldin. But I explained everything to them later, and to the others too. Otherwise Lola and Tina intended to claw my eyes out.
I shook my head with a smile:
Horror! So, okay, but what about Ivar?
Avoids us. He apologized, gave gifts to all the guys, whoever suffered. The weapon is good, of course not the same as your sword and dagger, but very worthy. The guys from poor families would never be able to buy anything like this themselves. It happened to me too, although we all refused. And then that's it. Avoids conversations, immediately runs away during breaks, sits away from Jurgis and Evart during lectures. Blames himself for everything and believes that he is dangerous to others.
In fact, it’s my fault,” I became sad. - All because of my stupidity.
“Talk to him,” my partner stroked my hand. - He feels very bad.
I just nodded. I'll talk, of course.
I was kept in the infirmary until the evening, after which I was kicked out with a certificate stating that I had to rest for two more days and that I would not be allowed to attend classes during this time. All the teachers were warned, so all I could do was follow the doctors’ orders. And in order to fully relax and eat properly, it was decided to send me to Karel’s and my mansion. It was Annushka who ordered this. She came in to check on me, looked me up and down with a calm expression on her face and said:
You look disgusting, Zolotova. The appearance of a striga does not suit you at all.
I even choked from such a statement, and the dark fairy continued:
I hope your immediate plans no longer include death? - After watching me desperately shake my head, she continued: “That’s good.” Otherwise, you know, you wouldn’t have succeeded anyway.
Mmm? - I mumbled.
You, Zolotova, have extremely tired me with your ability to get into trouble. You just have an amazing desire to die. Either in the castle you rush at an artifact of the Primordial Darkness, then you activate another ancient artifact that sucks magic from everything around you, then with all your... ahem... strength you fly into the thorns of the derkhan in a combat transformation. But this is not enough: your partner, out of great intelligence, decided to finish you off with lightning. And this is Karel Vestov! A model of sanity and calm. I no longer mention all your attempts to jump off a cliff while escaping from a dragon and other arts.
But I didn’t do it on purpose, Master! - in a whisper, but I was offended with all my heart.
Yes, yes, I'm aware. You, adept, like a cat, have nine lives? No? However, this is no longer important. You see, Zolotova, I’m not used to losing students. This is a blow to my reputation, and I value it very much. Therefore, while your lifeless body was lying around frightening those around you with your torn throat, I had to take action. Very timely, by the way. If I hadn’t had time while Master Lithaniel was healing the wound, everything might not have ended so rosy. Your partner acted extremely irresponsibly, although I understand his motives. But the forces need to be balanced! With those discharges that he managed to release out of fright, it was possible to burn down a medium-sized village.
