How to decorate the entrance to a private house. How to make an entrance vestibule in a private house
Any owner of a private cottage or estate has at least once thought about which design of the porch of a country house to choose so that it matches the overall architectural style of the building, is comfortable, safe, convenient, cozy, and demonstrates the hospitality of the owners.
Countless options for the porch of a country house, photographs of which are generously replete with the Internet, show us how extraordinary, creative, but at the same time practical and rational the owners are in solving this problem. But such diversity does not add clarity; it is very easy to get confused in the abundance of design solutions.
Semicircular porch with closed vestibule
In the article we systematize information about what types of porches for a home come in shape, style, and size. Let's discuss the pros and cons of closed and open extensions, look at the question of how best to position the steps, and how to properly unfold the staircase. And we will try to fully answer the question of what the ideal entrance porch of a private house should be like; the photos will help us illustrate the most successful ideas for extensions.
Prerequisites
A porch, in essence, is a platform with an adjacent staircase. It can be built-in, designed together with the main building, added with your own hands after the completion of a private house, with its own foundation, or attached-cantilever; it is not fundamental and solid.
An original idea for a private house, a built-in vestibule and open steps made of natural stone
Regardless of the stage at which the porch for a private house was built, the optimal slope of the staircase relative to the horizon is 23-45 °, everything above is an extension ladder, below is a ramp.

Of course, the porch must resonate with the main architectural concept of a private house; it must be safe, beautiful, comfortable, and meet all the needs of the owners.

But among other conditions, first of all, the porch must be ergonomic, which means comfortable and practical. All the main parameters for the construction of the porch of a private house are regulated by SNiP. So, according to the standards, a comfortable step depth is 270-300 mm, and a height is 120-180 mm, the sum of the corresponding dimensions of the tread and riser should be 450 mm.

The width of the stairs for the comfortable passage of one person is 600-900 mm; at a distance of 1200-1450 mm, 2 people can easily separate. If the porch consists of three or more steps, then it is recommended to fence it with railings 900-1200 mm high; in private construction, the height of the fence is not strictly regulated.
Photo of the front porch of a private house, semicircular lines of steps visually smooth out the massiveness of the extension
Particular attention is paid to the organization of the upper platform; it is made below the threshold level front door by 50 mm, as required by fire regulations. The recommended depth of the platform is one and a half times the width of the door, but in practice this criterion is often neglected.
Eclecticism, in the photo there is a project for the porch of a wooden house with a high base, the extension includes a terrace and a covered hallway
The width of the upper podium is limited only by the space in front of a private house and personal preferences, so it can be a tiny patch, or a full-fledged terrace encircling the perimeter of the building.

Shape, size and design features
It should be noted that modern private construction technologies make it possible to build a porch of almost any shape: rectangular, semicircular, curvilinear with smooth or, on the contrary, sharp lines, trapezoidal, multifaceted, etc.
A semicircular porch to a brick house; in addition to smooth rounded lines, the steps have a vague trapezoidal shape; coupled with massive railings, this design balances the dimensions of the building
The semicircular porch smooths out corners and straight lines; such steps provide comfortable entrance to the home from all sides. The soft outlines of the entrance ensemble further emphasize the hospitality of the hosts. Private rectangular porches made of brick, stone or concrete look very impressive; the highlight here is the lowest step, laid out in a semicircle.
A semicircular step made of rough material looks impressive and original
Trapezoidal steps balance the size of the building; they can decrease in size, but sometimes, on the contrary, they expand and smoothly move into the upper platform. A square or rectangular porch gives the building rigor and graphics.

Depending on the size of the upper platform, the porch can be:
- a terrace is a large open area with railings;
- patio - a platform with a canopy, most often without fencing;
- veranda - this is the same terrace, but closed and glazed;
- or just a small extension that protects the entrance to the house from dirt, dust and precipitation.

It should be noted that private houses are often built with a high base; this may be due to several criteria. Firstly, the project, where a technical floor is provided, and secondly, the climate zone, in snowy regions, a high porch is simply a vital necessity, thirdly, the difficult terrain. An extension on stilts allows you to make full use of even uneven areas, eliminating labor-intensive and sometimes impractical earthworks.

As for the location of the stairs relative to the main platform, they can adjoin strictly perpendicular to the facade of a private house, approach from one or two sides, or encircle the platform in a circle.
Double-flight porch of a house with a high base
If there is not enough space in front of a private house, a porch is usually placed along the facade, or a turning staircase with several flights is made, with terraces-platforms at different levels.

Stairs located on the sides, on both sides of the site, are the optimal way out for narrow extensions. Such designs are appropriate and justified if there is practically no space in front of a private house, it is necessary to make a narrow extension, and at the same time provide a comfortable entrance for several people.
Small, narrow two-sided porch for a private house
It is very convenient when the steps are located in a circle from the main platform. Typically this technique is used in the construction of small, low porches, when it is necessary to provide an entrance on three sides.

Sometimes simple, but unusual and original ideas for a porch significantly enliven and decorate the architecture of a private house. As a rule, such an extraordinary approach is required to solve several problems at once; the photo below is a clear example of this.
The corner round porch provides entrance to the house from different sides, and at the same time levels the sloping area in front of the house
One of the most impressive solutions for the porch of a private house, but it is almost impossible to implement it as a separate extension, is when the porch is placed under the same roof as the house, or the second floor or balcony is a canopy for the terrace. This configuration is most typical for a Finnish-style porch, where the entrance is most often located on the side.

As a rule, such a porch is combined with a veranda or terrace. This design of the entrance group looks solid; it is a very practical solution for private houses with a small garden plot.

Style and materials for a private porch
When developing a style for the porch of a private house, you can use almost any materials suitable for outdoor use, the main thing is that they resonate with the design of the main building.
Concrete porch for a private log cabin
For private construction, as a rule, wood, stone, metal and concrete structures are used, forging and carving are not only decorative decorations, but often also significant technical elements of the extension, for example, a porch with openwork forged railings and consoles for a canopy, or carved wooden posts and balusters.
Extension made of wood in Russian style
Sometimes it is the combination of several styles and different materials that results in a stunningly beautiful, original and very practical architectural composition of the entrance group.
Semicircular closed porch made of polycarbonate
For example, the combination of natural stone and rough boards gives the structure the solidity, color and originality that are inherent in mountainous areas. Usually this design technique is used to create a chalet style, and it should be noted that it is very popular in Russian latitudes.
Porch-veranda in a chalet style, the rounded edges of the stone contrast in an original way with the clear geometry of the roof
The Mediterranean style of the entrance architectural ensemble is also very popular in the modern design of private properties. It should be noted that it can be divided into two types. One incorporates notes of Greek and Roman culture; this style is characterized by a large stone courtyard with gentle multi-tiered steps, beautiful sandstone finishing, and heavy metal elements.
The combination of natural flat rubble stone with sandstone elements is always stylish and sophisticated
Another direction of the Mediterranean style synthesized the flavor of Italian, Spanish and French culture. Typically, this type of private porch design is found in coastal areas with uneven land. The extension consists of open terraces on several levels, paved with paving stones or clinker, connected by small stone stairs. The area near the house is usually lined with deck boards and is protected from the sun by a canopy supported by columns. The perimeter of the terraces is surrounded by massive concrete balusters and wide railings; this splendor is decorated with sculptures, fountains and flower pots.
The Mediterranean porch style is suitable for rectangular-shaped private properties located on areas with uneven terrain
Separately, I would like to say about the porch-fortress. As a rule, these are relatively small closed extensions with a roof, which is supported by dimensional support pillars: stone, brick, or thick logs. Such designs give the impression of the reliability of a private home; the abundant vegetation gives a special charm to the porch.

Small porches with a glassed-in veranda are ideal for rural and country houses. This design allows you to be closer to nature, and at the same time protects the recreation area from precipitation. In addition, for small private houses this is an additional opportunity to expand the living space.

When choosing a look and style for the porch of a private house, do not be afraid of extraordinary ideas. A well-planned architectural ensemble of the entrance group can radically change the exterior of the house, adding sophistication, sophistication, individuality, and at the same time comfort and coziness.
There are a great variety of design solutions, and each private porch has its own characteristics, determined by the architecture, landscape, materials and needs of the owners. And what the entrance to your house will be like is up to you to decide.
Any home should be convenient and comfortable to live in. Great importance has the exterior of the building. The entrance to the house, the porch, is the calling card of any home; it is the first thing guests see. Its design gives an impression of the house and its owner. With the help of an extension, the home takes on a complete and elegant look.
What is a porch and why is it needed?
A porch is an essential element of a private house, its architectural addition. The structure emphasizes the beauty and integrity of the entire building.
Main components of the structure:
- steps;
- railings;
- visor;
- area.
The entrance extension performs two main functions: practical and decorative.
The practical one is as follows:
- Protecting the entrance from bad weather is the main purpose of the structure.
- If the house has a basement floor, the entrance door is placed higher than the ground level. In this case, a person’s exit from the building to the ground is excluded. The building must be equipped with steps and handrails for convenient and safe movement from indoors to outdoors.
- The design allows you to build an additional storage room under the stairs, which is never superfluous. Setting up such a room with your own hands is very practical.
Types of porch structures
When designing the entrance group, you need to immediately decide on the type and features of the building.
The entrance to a house can be classified according to two characteristics:
- by type of structure;
- based on construction materials.
According to the shape of the protrusion, the structure can be round or rectangular.
The most common 4 types of structure:
- Open is the simplest version of the porch. It is mounted with railings and a canopy. In summer they decorate with living decor, which can be moved into the house in winter.
- Closed - used to decorate the entrance to the house; transparent or translucent glass, polycarbonate or mosquito net are used for the walls. It is convenient to use such a room as a preliminary hallway and relax in it at any time of the year.
- Wall-mounted - made if there is a basement floor in the house or the need is due to the landscape around the building. The design is similar to a balcony.
- Porch-terrace is a design option designed with an open area. Used for outdoor recreation.
Porch styles
The design of the entrance group should correspond to the overall design of the home. Particular attention should be paid to the use of high-quality finishing materials; their choice is now varied.
Classical
The main features of the style are considered to be restraint and rigor of taste. Several flower pots and a wreath on the door will not be superfluous.
Signs of a porch in the classics:
- gable canopy;
- point railings;
- round decorative balusters;
- materials for cladding - decorative stone or tiles.
Country
Used for decorating wooden houses. Accordingly, the extension is also made of wood.
Used for decoration:
- hanging flowers;
- decorative carvings and patterns;
- exquisite shape of the canopy and railings.
Wooden benches and a beautiful path to the doors look good.
With a view of the fortress
The porch is a massive structure; the structure shows that the house is the support and protection of its owners. The decor for it is often natural stone.
They will add charm and wealth to this exterior:
- forged fencing;
- lamps in the form of torches;
- lattice structures with climbing plants.
European
Style presupposes the presence of regular shapes and restrained lines.
To give comfort the following are used:
- wicker chairs and table;
- hanging and floor flowerpots;
- a large number of garden figures.
An extension in European design is a small building, lined with:
- natural material;
- artificial stone;
- ceramic tiles.
French
Reminds me of European style. Wooden furniture or wicker items are used for decoration.
Main differences:
- the presence of a glass door;
- openwork lattice design.
Hanging bright flowers with delicate tones help complement the composition.
With side entrance
A non-standard solution would be a design with a side entrance. A round building located on the corner of a rectangular house looks impressive.
A corner street extension can be:
- round;
- trapezoidal;
- triangular shape.
The complex geometry of the structure should not be dissonant with the main building, but create a single concept with it.
With two entrances
If there is not enough space in front of the home, a porch is usually placed along the facade or a turning staircase with several flights is made.
The ideal option is to use steps on both sides of the site.
The option with two inputs is justified when:
- an extension is necessary;
- the porch area is narrow;
- There is not enough space in front of the house.
In this case, a comfortable entrance to the house is ensured.
With canopy
A structure equipped with a roof or canopy is a covered structure. It has no walls, only railings protecting the extension from the street.
In addition to practical functions, the canopy and handrails serve as elements of decoration and design of the entrance group of the mansion.
An effective solution is:
- establishing a porch under the same roof as the house;
- the second floor or balcony is a canopy for the terrace.
The configuration is most typical for a Finnish-style porch; the entrance is usually located on the side.
Even if the canopy in front of the front door is made an accent element of the facade, the material used and the overall design style must be the same.
In the form of a terrace
A popular type of extension is a porch-terrace. Can be closed or open type. This design of the entrance group looks solid. For country houses with a small plot of land - a very practical solution. Used for leisure and recreation. Essentially, this is an outdoor living room.
An option for a non-traditional design design is a mini gazebo on the terrace. You can add coziness to the structure with the help of plants and a comfortable furniture group.
The purpose of practical wicker furniture in the interior:
- creates a special charm to the environment;
- Serves as a decoration for the terrace seating area.
You can choose furniture of various designs and colors to suit any style.
Options for decorating with live plants:
- wall planters;
- large outdoor pots and tubs;
- special gratings that create a “green wall”.
What materials can it be made from?
Before you start building a porch to the facade, you must have a clear plan and drawing of the structure. Decide on the material for the building and its dimensions. The durability of the structure depends on a high-quality and reliable foundation. It can be built from any available building materials.
Wooden
Wood is the most popular material. This entrance looks especially beautiful when the façade of the building is made of wood.
A common option today is wood porch decking.
They are installed on:
- concrete;
- brick;
- metal base.
In 80% of cases, pine is used for their manufacture - the most common and cheapest material. A wooden building will look good for many years.
Proper care for it consists of:
- sealing;
- varnishing;
- staining.
Concrete
Concrete is the cheapest and most durable material for making a porch.
The versatility of a concrete structure is as follows:
- is monolithic;
- does not become loose over time;
- can be given absolutely any shape;
- easy to repair and decorate with any decor.
The cost and duration of the project does not change significantly.
The concrete porch is finished:
- sometimes with a stone;
- clinker or other tiles;
- paint and other materials.
In modern homes with wood and brick facades, it is often left bare to highlight the texture of the walls and the surrounding environment.
Brick
Brick is a fairly economical option; the strength of the structure is inferior to that of a concrete structure. This the porch often has a base and/or a concrete step covering.
Features of the structure:
- reliable;
- more expensive;
- very attractive;
- installation takes a lot of time and labor.
In the long term, the costs will be fully recouped due to its ease of care.
Metal and forged
Metal is not the most common material for such structures. With the right choice of project, the porch will look very impressive for a building made in any style.
By metal or forged we mean decorative elements of the extension:
- roof;
- steps;
- railings made of metal.
Sometimes you can see a completely metal structure.
The main advantages of a metal entrance group:
- high strength;
- durability.
Negative points:
- additional costs for painting;
- the need for anti-corrosion treatment;
- The metal floor is quite cold.
For terraces intended for recreation, the metal base is covered with wood or a concrete base is used.
From stone
Natural stone is a classic option, withstands all weather conditions well and does not require maintenance over time. This justifies itth application as a material for decorating the porch.
The main advantages of use are:
- beauty;
- durability;
- high strength;
There are many different types of stone used for:
- creating a foundation;
- decorative finishing.
The more expensive and reliable ones are used for the foundation.
Porch finishing options
The main condition for design is functionality and practicality. The space in front of the building and the entrance part are clearly visible from the street, this requires careful attention to finishing.
In this case you can:
- Make a big front door.
- Arrange a stone path with lighting and decorative details in the form of figures on the sides.
- Decorate the area with green plants. Their number depends on the size of the area in front of the entrance.
In landscaping you can use:
- shrubs;
- flowers or spray roses;
- decorative lawn;
- oaks, weeping birches;
- apple trees and maples.
Japanese trees or mountain pines will look beautiful.
The nuances of making it yourself
Before construction, it is necessary to think through the entire building plan. It’s better to draw it on paper and calculate all the dimensions, paying attention to the nuances.
It is important for the project to provide:
- tools;
- building materials;
- location of adjacent parts (doors, walkways).
During construction, follow the instructions:
- Pay special attention to the construction of the upper platform. It should be located 50 mm below the level of the entrance door threshold, this is due to the requirements of fire safety regulations.
- The depth of the platform should be 1.5 times the width of the doorway.
- The width of the upper podium can be limited only by the area in front of a private house. Its dimensions can vary: from a small patch to a spacious terrace encircling the building around the entire perimeter.
Building codes
Whatever design of the structure is chosen, it is important to remember about compliance with construction technologies and the quality of materials. If these requirements are met, the building will last a long time.
First of all, the porch is the entrance to the house.
The building must meet the following requirements:
- convenience;
- ergonomics;
- safety;
- practicality.
The main parameters for its construction are regulated by SNiP.
- step height - from 120 to 180 mm;
- depth for convenience when climbing stairs - within 270-300 mm;
- the width of the flight of stairs is at least 900 mm for the movement of one person, for two - at least 1200 mm;
- if there are three or more steps, it is necessary to install a fence; its height must be at least 900 mm.
How to evaluate the entrance to a house
Beauty is a subjective thing. The harmony of the design of the porch of a private house can be assessed by the overall picture, the combination of the entrance with the appearance of the facade of the building.
The main criteria include:
- degree of protection of the structure from the sun and bad weather;
- comfort and safety of going up and down stairs;
- the functionality of the design of the area in front of the entrance to the house for a convenient relaxation with friends;
- high strength and massiveness of the structure, allowing it to survive any disaster;
- an open view from the window, not obscured by the details of the building.
When choosing the type and design style of a building, you should not be afraid of extraordinary ideas.
A well-planned architectural ensemble of the entrance group can add:
- sophistication;
- sophistication;
- individuality;
- comfort and coziness;
- radically change the exterior of the home.
The dimensions of the porch determine the owner’s attitude towards the house and characterize the habits of the people living in it.
Video about decorating the porch
Various design options are presented in the video.
The porch is an obligatory element of the entrance part of the building and its “business card”. The desire to decorate your own home, taking into account fashion trends and personal taste preferences, is inherent in almost everyone. The design of the porch of a private house should emphasize the integrity of the entire structure and make it more attractive. There are many options for designing the entrance of a building, so we invite you to consider the most popular and interesting of them.
Wooden porch
The most popular option remains installing wooden decking on the porch. In most cases, such structures are made from pine wood, as the most inexpensive and popular natural raw material. If the porch is properly sealed, varnished and painted, it will look attractive for many years.
This is a current way to decorate a facade, which is decorated in country style. This design can be complemented with wood-based porch decor, which will add the atmosphere of a country cottage. Wood can be complemented with stone, which is relevant not only for country style. In private country buildings, these two materials look quite harmonious together and are suitable for finishing platforms, doors and for use as decoration.
Concrete porch
Concrete is considered a universal material, which is cheap and reliable, and is also optimally suited for the manufacture of porches. This is a monolithic structure that will not begin to wobble over time, which is sometimes inherent in wooden products. In addition, it can be easily repaired and decorated with any decor. Do not forget that a concrete porch can be of various shapes, which will not particularly affect the price and the amount of time to complete the task.
Concrete structures can be decorated with tiles, for example, clinker. There are options trimmed with stone, and also painted and treated with other materials. In modern buildings with a facade made of wood, brick or siding, the concrete porch can be left without additional covering. This allows you to emphasize the features of the texture of the walls and their colors.
Brick porch
A brick porch is a more expensive option compared to the previous ones, but it also looks attractive and is considered a fairly reliable solution for decorating a home. Installing the structure may take more time and require serious effort, but in the future the work put in will pay off in a big way, since it does not require additional maintenance.
Often, a brick porch has a concrete base or a covering of steps based on other materials. There are also options for laying tiles on the steps. It looks homely, inspires confidence and adds reliability to the building. But be careful, as any step surface you choose should not be slippery, otherwise this area will become potentially dangerous in the cold season due to snow and ice.
Porch made of stone
Natural stone is considered a classic option. Such raw materials are distinguished by durability, presentability and strength, which is especially important. There are many varieties of stone, some suitable for the base, and a number of others for creating decorative elements (and the raw materials for making the base will be much more expensive). Although, in general, all types of stone can withstand adverse weather conditions and will not require additional maintenance for a long time.
If the building is made of stone, then you can fit a porch with columns into the overall structure. Natural stone can be combined with monumental elements. Such a composition will look harmonious.
Metal and wrought iron porch
Usually, when they talk about a forged or metal porch, they mean decorative parts of the structure - awnings, railings, steps, which are made of metal. But sometimes a completely metal porch is installed in a private house.
The main advantage of such structures is increased strength and service life. However, you will have to constantly paint and treat your porch to prevent it from deteriorating due to corrosion. Moreover, a metal floor will be quite cold, so it is not suitable for arranging a terrace. The latter option requires a concrete base or wood flooring on a metal base.
Porch with canopy
In most cases, awnings seem to continue the roof and, together with the porch, perform the important function of protection from the effects of precipitation and solar radiation. This is an excellent option for arranging a comfortable entrance to the building.
If the building has architectural features, which will not allow you to install a canopy over the main entrance, even a small one, replace it with a canopy. Such a detail will not only partially perform the functions of a canopy, but will also be able to diversify appearance buildings, and if you choose the right product or make it in an original way, it will become a real decoration of the exterior.
Even a small canopy can make the entrance to a private home more presentable. Its shade can protect you from the sun, as well as save you from streams of water during the rain if you open the doors or wait for the car.
Porch with steps and railings
If the house has a high foundation and you can install steps that will lead to the main entrance, installing railings will be relevant. This design will make the exterior of the building appear safer and more stable, and will also perform a very specific function and help residents and visitors enter the house in bad weather.
This is a traditional type of design for the entrance to a building. It can be combined with a canopy or canopy, and can also be additionally decorated with various designs to make the composition look complete.
The design of the entrance to a residential building is an important decorative element, since it should make a favorable impression on both others and the owners. The first impression of the neatness and hospitality of the home owners will depend on the correct choice of the style of the entrance area. Of course, the entrance to the house is practically the calling card of the home and its owners.
Features of the entrance area arrangement
There can be many options for designing the entrance area to a residential building; everything here depends only on imagination and design invention. However, when choosing the interior for the entrance, you should take into account the color, shape and general details of the house in order to achieve a relationship between its appearance and the unified architecture as a whole. For example, painting the canopy and details of the future porch must be done depending on the overall color scheme of the house.
There are the most common entrance design methods that you should choose. Any of them can subsequently be modernized according to the taste and desire of the owner. What is common to all is that their design elements can be used both in combination and separately from each other.
Styling of the entrance to the house
The semicircular entrance area with metal fencing is quite popular. Most often, such structures are complemented by a plexiglass roof. It can also simultaneously serve as a frame for climbing plants: clematis, wild grapes or ivy.
If desired, the entrance to a private house can be decorated in the style of a rural house. This style is characterized by bases for climbing creeping plants located on both sides of the entrance, flower beds in the form of a pyramid, a door cornice in a traditional style and different types of lanterns.
There is nothing more beautiful than an entrance decorated with side trellises and an arch. In such cases, the entrance area will be effectively emphasized by tubs of boxwood or planted decorative ivy.
As an experiment, you can decorate the entrance area in the style of the Far East. An unusually shaped gate and a paved path made of stones of various shapes and sizes will look very stylish.
If you don’t like this option, the entrance area, made in the Mediterranean style, will look no less original. This entrance is distinguished by columns, which can perform both structural and decorative functions (like a frame for climbing flowers). A pebble mosaic and clay vases will help complete this style.
The entrance in the European style is characterized by the correctness and severity of the forms. At the same time, the entrance area is decorated with a variety of accessories. These can be street metal lanterns or decorative garden figurines of animals and gnomes. The steps are lined with stone or tiles.
Having great creative potential, you can try to diversify the organization of the entrance and create your own unique image of decoration.
Often a small staircase at the entrance to a house is decorated with flower vases, which can be all kinds of old barrels, iron watering cans, unsanded baskets and even old cast iron pots. In general, everything that previously stood unnecessarily, but now can become a highlight of the design of the entrance to the house.
It is more advisable to place one or more types of flower plants in the entrance area, forming entire flower baskets (flower pots or rectangular boxes). Flowers with an erect stem (tuberous begonias, marigolds, lavender) are planted in the center of the composition, and flowers with a cascading stem (nasturtiums, petunias, ampelous pelargoniums) are planted at the edges.
Hanging flower arrangements look especially unusual if you place flowerpots with plants of matching colors on the steps, for example, red ampelous pelargonium at the top, and red balsam at the bottom.
The color composition can also be designed in the form of a ball and hung in the center of the porch at the entrance. Lobelias and petunias are perfect for such designs.
Wonderful Hanging Gardens
Hanging gardens, arranged with trellises or pergolas, look quite wonderful and magically beautiful. They are ideal for climbing roses, ivy or other ornamental plants that tend to cling and creep.
To create especially beautiful forms, the trellises can be mounted on the wall at the entrance, designed in the form of a pyramid, canopy, arch or even a gazebo. Such techniques provide a special appearance and functional feasibility, since the pergola, shading the approaches to the house, can simultaneously serve as a support for vines.
In most cases, climbing plants are planted directly into the ground near the entrance, in specially left holes, in large boxes or other containers. In open ground you can grow various types of vines, clematis, and boxes are used for planting annual climbing plants such as decorative beans or purple and blue morning glory.
We design the area in front of the entrance
In cases where the building of the house is moved deeper into the garden plot and is surrounded by trees, an unusual spatial solution for the entrance area appears, thanks to which the path to the entrance runs along shady plants, which in itself allows you to create a favorable microclimate in the living area.
On this platform (terrace), a pergalla covered with grapes, a cozy and comfortable seating area with a table and benches is arranged, which can be safely used as a summer dining room or as a place for receiving guests. Furniture can be stationary, light or portable.
For the decorative design of the area in front of the entrance, colored plaster, natural stone, linear or spot gardening (arrangement of flower arrangements singly or in rows) can be used. You can protect such a space by installing railings made of metal (forged) or wood.
The enclosed space with a barrier can be filled with functional and interesting wooden sofas with side tables. To protect the terrace from direct sunlight and winds, blinds (wicker or awning fabric towels) are hung to the top of the canopy on special screwed hooks.
A special touch of originality will be added by the floor covering, which, as a rule, directly depends on the imagination of the owners. Alternatively, it can be rough ceramic tiles made to look like marble or stone, or in the form of a mosaic pattern.
Ceramic flower pots embedded in the floor, “hanging flowers” suspended on metal chains in small boxes, or vases with hanging plants will also become an effective element.
And some more small but important moments
The lighting of the entrance area is also important. Hang cute outdoor lights on both sides of your porch and hide outdoor spotlights between potted plants or in bushes or grass for a beautiful entryway light at night.
If there is no porch or it is impossible to arrange a special area in front of the entrance, even the smallest space can be turned into a small blooming garden of plants in containers and a small raised flower bed.
The considered examples of organizing the entrance area to the house, of course, cannot cover all possible options; they only determine the direction of the creative search for their own solution. Let them help add comfort and personality to your home, and let the beauty surrounding it always lift your spirits. And remember, by adding a little hard work and imagination, you can successfully realize any architectural ideas, and the entrance to your house will become a source of pride and admiration.
The entrance to the house is a single set of solutions, including the approaches to the building, the area in front of the entrance, the porch, the entrance door, the vestibule, as well as architectural elements. In addition, additional entrances are often made, and each of them has its own characteristics. If the house has a built-in or attached garage, its location is also taken into account. What and where the entrance will be depends on the architecture, layout and structures of the building, the characteristics of the site and the taste of the owners. In case of complex decisions, the installation of entrance structures and its design will significantly affect the cost of the house. But, perhaps, the entrance is the accent in architecture and the comfort factor that you should not skimp on.
How many entrances should there be to a house?
You can get by with one entrance, especially if the house is small (100-150 m2 in area) and the security of the site is unreliable. But it is much more convenient if the house has several entrances and exits: main, recreational and utility.
Main (front) entrance leads into the hallway and should be conveniently connected to the kitchen, living room, as well as to the internal staircase. For comfortable relaxation in the fresh air, there is an exit from the living room or dining room to a terrace or veranda (winter garden) and then to the site. This solution is unusual, since in traditional Ukrainian houses they did not make a second exit (apparently, for fear of burglars and to preserve heat), but in foreign, for example Polish, projects, not a single house can do without it.
It is also desirable to have a convenient connection between the economic zones and the site. Usually it is carried out through a garage, boiler room or utility room, installing an external door in these rooms. If the house has a basement or ground floor, then depending on its purpose (for example, it contains a solid fuel boiler), a separate entrance may be required. The presence of utility entrances allows you to maintain cleanliness and order in the front and living areas of the house. Particularly effective are several entrances and exits located on different facades of the house (for example, on the main and courtyard).
The number and orientation of entrances to a building significantly influence its layout. The final decision is made by choosing a site for construction and outlining the zoning of the territory. After all, the house may be positioned in such a way that the site will only have to be accessed in one direction.
Where to locate the main entrance
Main entrance location- one of the most important initial conditions for house design. It can be installed in any part of the facade: in the middle, to the right or to the left, right up to the corner of the house. More often than not, the entrance is made on the main facade, opposite the entrance to the site, with the entrance to the garage located nearby. But options are possible: on the side facade and even on the back side of the building.
Regulations prohibit entering the house directly from the street. The facade should be 3-6 m from its red line (the border between public and private areas) depending on the category of the street. Only the garage can overlook the property line.
if the house is planned to be located at the beginning of the plot with a slight indentation from the street and the entrance is made on the main facade, then a second entrance-exit to the recreation area behind or to the side of the house is required. If in the building design the main entrance is located next to the living room windows, it is better not to orient it towards the street (the living room will be noisy and hectic), but to place it on the rear or side facade. In the first case, it is desirable to have a utility entrance from the street, through which you can go to the kitchen, bring in furniture, etc. (it can be combined with the entrance to the garage). In the second case, we are dealing with a common and convenient solution. Having made an entrance on the side facade, you get a front courtyard, which is clearly visible from the gate and flows into the recreation area.
IF THE HOUSE IS PUSHED DEPTH INTO THE PLOT, it is logical to make the main entrance on the main facade and orient the living room in this direction. Then a recreational exit may not be needed. The recreation area can be combined with the entrance to the house through the terrace.
How to design a front garden
The front area in front of the entrance is called the front garden. It becomes a kind of calling card of the house. It is important that the style of the landscape composition matches the style of the building and, in particular, the style in which the entrance is decorated.
front yard. The main elements of the composition are free space, beautiful paving, a well-groomed lawn, flower beds, exotic plants (for example, palm trees in tubs), fountains, etc. It is advisable to provide a platform for cars. In order for the ceremonial composition to always look good, it should not be capricious in care. Conifers and other evergreens, rockeries with ground cover, lawns and trimmed shrubs are suitable.
GREEN HALLWAY. On the area in front of the house, you can give preference to lush greenery and lay a path to it among the blooming mixed borders. In such a cozy front garden you can install
garden furniture, gazebo or sun canopy. But caring for plants will require a lot of time.
Path to the house. If the building is moved deeper into the site, to approach it you need a front alley or path (not necessarily straight, like an arrow) with a minimum width of 60 cm. A paved front area is arranged in front of the house. It is more profitable to place a garage and parking lot at the beginning of the site: this will reduce the length of the entrance and eliminate the presence of cars near the house.
How to design and decorate a porch
A platform is required in front of the front door, the surface of which should be above ground level and almost at the same level as the floor of the house. This is the porch. It can be of any size and can be either a slab, just large enough to stop when opening the door, or a terrace that can accommodate a table, chairs and flowerpots with plants. The area in front of the front door and preferably the staircase leading to the site must be protected from rain, because they will have to be used in any weather. And water and snow from the roof of the house and the porch must go beyond the entrance area.
The porch is equipped with lamps, covered with non-slip material, and sometimes equipped with a warm floor to ensure comfort and safety in any weather.
The shape, size and design of the porch depend on the architects and designs of the house, as well as its size and style. If the house does not have a high base, then the area in front of the front door will be only slightly
raised above the ground and can smoothly transition into paving on the site. If the house has a high base, you will need steps, and for safety - a fence. For hauling heavy pieces of furniture, moving strollers, suitcases, etc. convenient ramp. By the way, it is one of the elements of a barrier-free space accessible to people with disabilities.
Such a porch will rise above the territory, have clear boundaries and a representative character, and will also require special attention from a constructive point of view. The front entrance will be decorated with a massive, solid door, columns, balustrade, wrought iron railings, marble steps, flowerpots, garden furniture on the terrace, etc. These elements must be compatible with each other in style and match the design of the building. In this case, the entrance should stand out on the facade, and it is better if the entrance door and the wall contrast in color. A partially glazed panel or transom will serve to illuminate the hallway.
entrance to the house, located in the middle of the facade, is characteristic of classical architecture: it is believed that it gives the house respectability. An asymmetrical entrance is more common in modern homes;
And if the house includes a garage, it is desirable that you can walk from it into the hallway. To make the path shorter, the entrance to the house is placed closer to the garage;
The entrance to the house does not have to be located opposite the gate. If on a small site it is impossible to move the house away from the road and the recreation area on the main facade is combined with the main entrance, then moving the front door relative to the entrance to the site will create a more intimate atmosphere in front of the building;
ON A PLOT WITH A SLOPE TO THE STREET HOUSE they place it on a raised platform, and there are steps on the path leading up to it. If the path to the house is made slightly winding, it will be easier to climb, looking at the house from different angles. A straight path is more suitable for a house in the tradition of classical architecture, with a symmetrical facade.
Options for house entrance designs
Recessed entrance
This option is convenient if there is not enough space in front of the house for an entrance area. The entrance is protected from precipitation by the ceiling of the second floor or the roof slope. The depth must be at least 90 cm. It can be supplemented with a protruding platform covered by a roof overhang, a canopy or a balcony.
Entrance to the wall plane
The advantage of this option is that there are no corners in the house plan that require additional insulation of walls and ceilings. The width of the area in front of the entrance must be at least 110 cm. Above the door you can make a balcony or canopy mounted on the wall using brackets.
Corner entrance
This solution is convenient if the entrance is located in the side or rear facade. You can place the front door in the front or protruding part of the wall. The porch is protected from the wind. A canopy over the porch and the approach to it along the wall can be easily achieved using a roof overhang, canopy, balcony or bay window.
Projecting entrance
The location of the entrance in the protruding part of the facade (risalite) allows you to place here also a vestibule, a staircase and a dressing room - rooms that do not require intensive heating. Then the protruding entrance part of the house can even be designed in the form of a glazed veranda or winter garden.
In addition to the entrance to the cottage, you can consider such options as:
Balcony above the porch
The classic solution is to combine the entrance with a balcony or bay window, which serves as a canopy for it. The design of the balcony (bay window) can be cantilevered. However, in this case, the reinforced concrete slab pinched in the wall becomes a cold bridge, the greater the length of the balcony. This leads to significant heat loss. It is more profitable and easier to support the balcony slab on the wall and columns independent of the wall of the house. Columns allow you to clearly define the porch and serve as an expressive architectural element. It is not necessary to make a roof over the balcony: as a rule, it is intended only for occasional use.
Pediment above the entrance
A classic of private house architecture - the device above the pediment entrance. With its help, you can give the facade expressiveness using minimal means. The pediment appears above the entrance to the projection, but an ordinary canopy over the porch can also be designed as a pediment. In this case, the roof ridge of the protruding part of the house is directed perpendicular to the main slope and forms a triangle, semicircle or other shape conceived by the architect above the entrance. Pediments can have different types: for example, a wall protruding above the roof (classic pediment), or an element on which a wooden rafter system is visible. The gable wall does not carry a load, and a window of any shape can be made in it.
Canopies and awnings
Installing a light canopy over the entrance is the simplest and most economical way to protect against precipitation. The canopy can be mounted on wooden or metal brackets fixed to the wall, and in a modern-style house it can be hung on steel cables. The material of the canopy may differ from the roof of the house, but it must be resistant to atmospheric influences - metal, glass, plastic are suitable. The shape of the coating should ensure water drainage and snow removal beyond the site so that the structure is not damaged during snowfalls. A large canopy is supported on columns. It is important that the style, material, shape and color of the canopy, brackets and supports match the structure.
Stairs to the porch
If the house is on a basement, in order to enter the room, you will have to climb the stairs to the porch. The minimum width of the stairs (as well as the ramp) is 110 cm. It is better if it has odd number steps. The convenient height of the latter is 140-170 mm. width - 340-370 mm. Gentle steps are much more convenient and safer than steep ones. The coating material must be non-slip. It is better to close the risers of the stairs to prevent dirt from getting under the porch. If there are more than three steps, it is advisable to make railings with a height of 100-110 mm, and also to protect the porch with them.
Area in front of the entrance (porch)
In front of the door, you need a platform with a width of at least one and a half times the width of the front door (135 cm), located at least 15 cm above the ground level and 5-10 cm below the vestibule floor level. The surface of the site must have an outward slope of 2 cm per 1 m of length to ensure water drainage. The distance from the edge of the platform to the open door is at least 75 cm, but the more free space, the better, because then a group of people can fit on the porch.
Entrance door
It is better if the outer door opens outwards. This increases security against burglary and is also subject to fire safety requirements. The height of the door is at least 195 cm. The width of the door leaf is: single - 85-90 cm, double-leaf with identical leaves - 85 cm, with unequal leaves: main - 80 cm, additional - 35-40 cm. Double doors require less when opening free space on the site. Taking into account the climate of Ukraine, in the northern and eastern regions, standards require the installation of a thermal gateway - a vestibule - at the entrance to the house. Its minimum depth is 120 cm, width - 110 cm. In the southern regions it is optional. If for some reason the vestibule is undesirable, it can be replaced with a double door. Often the vestibule is moved outside the main (heated) volume of the house (the traditional version of this solution is a glazed veranda).
ENTRANCE ANNEX OR the porch with stairs and the main wall (that is, the protruding part of the house) must have a single foundation (with the same depth) and rigid connections inside the wall. This will avoid uneven shrinkage of the building and the appearance of shrinkage cracks. Only for light one-story extensions is it permissible to use independent structures;
IN HOUSES WITH LOW BASE FOR For a porch or terrace next to the living room, you can use a monolithic concrete slab 15-20 cm thick, buried 5-10 cm in the ground. The entire plane of the slab is reinforced in its lower part. A strip or column foundation is made under the high porch;
If there is a heated room at the recessed entrance on the second floor, the ceiling of the second floor above the entrance is insulated from below the structure. If a balcony is made above the attached warm entrance, the insulation is placed on top of the balcony slab.
